I forget the name of this latest coalition. Does it really matter? The wrapping on the package may differ, but the contents are the same. These "concerned" citizens arc the same people who a year ago made a big fuss over getting the movie rating PG-1- 3 added to OPINION BY the list. A couple of years ago they made a big deal over violence on television detective shows (a recurring motif). They're the same ones who picket call stores for selling what they "pornography," or who, in Utah, fretted last November over the Cable Decency Seven-1- 1 Act. Come to think of it, these are the same type of people who, 20 to 30 years ago, burned copies of Ulysses and The Catcher in the Rye outside of school libraries. And if it were up to them John Denver would probably be out on his can because of the offensive lyrics he sings in "Rocky Mountain High." Their latest concern has been spurred on by the grisly deaths of a series of people in Southern California. All were allegedly so-call- ed "Night Stalker," who reportedly was acting on the lyrics of a rock song by the group ACDC The parents comprint? That America's youths are being tainted by songs with lewd, suggestive, sexist or even violent lyrics, and that the "Night Stalker" incidents are the most extreme examples of what could happen (and what might be . Actually, the suggestive lyrics in Madonna's songs arc under attack by these same groups, who call the w ords anything but harmless. The same goes for songs by current stars like Prince and David Lee Roth, as well as lower-profibut le groups like Judas Priest and Motley Crue. In fact, even the Peter Pan of the musical world, Michael Jackson, has fallen under attack for suggestive lyrics in some of his songs. The direction the ami terrible song lyric committees want to take has been focused more and more over the past couple of weeks. What it will probably come down to is short of overall censorship this is still America and people can still pretty much say what they please. As long as there are kids out there to buy records, lewd lyrics or not, record makers will figure out a way to get them out. What will most likely evolve will be an agreement to place some sort of warning sticker on the outside of an album cover with a rating, similar to those you see on the heavier-rockin- g -- John Youngren murdered by the I thought her songs were rather bouncy and harmless. happening) if young people all across this country of ours take too seriously the lyrics of the songs they listen to. Gee. And I just liked Madonna because The point is, folks, that the best medicine for things you don't like that are served to the masses anyway is to ignore them. People may be offended when Madonna sings about losing virginity, but w ho held a gun at those people's heads and told them to listen to the lyrics if they didn't like them? Your average parent is not going to go to the record store with his 14 --year --old and check the warning label on every album the kid buys. But then, my arguments, or anyone else's, seem rather small, compared to the powerhouse committees which form every VASQUE -- so often to clean up the world again. No matter how many times they are told, they continue to believe that the little causes they've stumbled into are fair and just and deserving enough to provoke an effort to stamp them out. What these coalitions don't understand is that nobody is twisting their arms to make them turn on Prince. But if they don't like something, maybe they should twist their own arm. Or hand, even. And turn it off for themselves. John Youngren is a junior majoring in English and journalism. He is sports editor for the Chronicle. This plan will be designed to foil the attempts of youngsters to bring such naughty music into their parents homes and will, in effect, stamp out the possibility of another "Night Stalker" type killing spree from ever happening again. But what sort of silly problems are those, though? I'm much more concerned that Madonna is singing Like a Virgin than I am that there are senior citizens starving in nursing homes, or children without such concerned parents being beaten by them.
