President Chase K. Peterson, plays an important role in sustaining that which is "the university." In his annual address to faculty and report on the U, Friday morning, Peterson provided a model of "the university," and compared the U. to that ideal. He encouraged U. instructors to "recapture a spirit of common enterprise," as they seek to better both themselves and the U during the approaching academic year. As a harbor for scholarship and academia, Peterson said the U. has been tremendously successful. The recent "flowering of the sciences," he said, demonstrates that "learning for its own sake," exists abundantly at the U. Calling preservation of the liberal arts another crucial element of "the university," Peterson said the U. has also done well in that area even though liberal arts arc not often widely honored or understood. The U., he said, is often marvelously successful in providing students with the "first sense of intellectual excitement despite vocational distractions which might place liberal arts in danger." As a provider of education for the professions, Peterson said the U. has again done remarkably well. However, he said improvements could be made if administrators were better able to predict sudden enrollment shifts which lead to overcrowding in some departments and in others. Labeling collegiate life another vital part of the complete university, Peterson suggested this may be an area where the U. can strive for improvement. undcr-enrollme- nt While the U. provides ample opportunity for involvement in dance, theatre, political science and other said an expressed commonality between one student and one professor is the most exciting way collegiality is established. Because the U. is largely a commuter campus, he said such relationships are not often given an opportunity to develop and flourish. "Often, students in Utah think they can study, work, marry and have children all at the same time," Peterson said. "Unfortunately, this may sometimes lead to a strain i of mediocrity." A personal goal, he said, is to create a sense of openness in what could otherwise become a very impersonal environment. By hosting open office hours twice a month, Peterson said he is seeking input on all topics from anyone willing to provide it. Peterson said he looks forward in the coming year to a good relationship with the Utah Legislature that will result in badly needed funding for the U. "The way I see it, we have no enemies in the Mi' Legislature, only those who have not yet been enlightened," he said. In addition, Peterson said he will seek more private funding and gifts from Utahns who, although not often trained to think philanthropically, have come to realize their responsibility to the U. Peterson called computer literacy and improving the libraries the U.'s top priorities because he said ignoring them would literally be "making a vacuum of the core of the university." d of the U.'s freshman class each Noting that academic is probation, he said such a placed on year system will assure the proper placement of those students who enter the U. legally prepared but neither intellectually nor emotionally ready for university studies. "I am completely convinced," he said, "that we can have a pluralistic campus that is not remote, cold, or fragmented as the commuterampus image suggests." one-thir- 8 University of Utah President Chase N.
