Show The Daily Utah Chraaicle, Jhmndmj, Two in of asbestos discuss buildings problem Regents by Marva Dickie Chronicle staff The Board of Regents recently debated the problem of asbestos in campus buildings, approved a new graduate program at the University of Utah and appointed two regents to a task force on integrating women into the work force. At their December meeting, regents discussed the problem of friable asbestos which plagues buildings at the university and buildings at other campuses statewide. Arvo Van Alstyne, commissioner of higher education, recommended that each higher education institution make a study of possible asbestos sites on its campus. A report submitted to the regents by David Wilkinson, attorney general, and William Evans, assistant attorney general, said that buildings built or remodeled before 1978 have been found to contain a considerable amount of potentially harmful asbestos. The cost for correcting the problem is quite nign, a conservative estimate amounting to about S 10 per square foot for the removal and replacement of asbestos, At the University of Utah, about 13 buildings including Orson Spencer Hall, Kingsbury Hall, the Union Building, Special Events Center and Eccles Medical Library contain some friable asbestos material Friable asbestos can be crumbled by the hand to create airborne dust particles, which can cause cancer if inhaled. Due to the high cost of removal and replacement of asbestos, U. President Chase Peterson said at the meeting that it might not be feasible to try to get rid of it. Regents also approved a master's of fine arts (MFA) in creative writing, which will be offered in English as an alternative to traditional graduate education in the department.
