Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Thursday, December 6. 1979 Page Three Ginzberg talks on USSR "If the theme of this lecture was human rights in the Soviet Union, it would be the shortest lecture you've ever heard. There are no human rights in the Soviet Union." Alexander Ginzberg, a Soviet dissident and victim of Soviet labor camps since 1960 spoke with the aid of an interpreter, Harris Coulter, at Wednesday's challenge lecture in the Union ballroom. "If I were to talk about the struggle for human rights in the Soviet Union I would end up giving you a list of people sacrificed in this struggle," he said. Instead Ginzburg addressed the state of various freedoms in the Soviet Union. The freedom of conscience, the freedom to profess or not to profess a religion, is absent in the Soviet Union, he said. Freedom of the press is also limited in the Soviet Union, according to Ginzberg. Except for some underground presses, the state owns printing and copy machinesThe Soviet doesn't believe anything he reads in the Soviet newspaper, except perhaps the results of yesterday's soccer match," he said. Ginzberg was asked how changes in Soviet leadership might affect the country. "If Brezhnev were to die today, it wouldn't make any difference, because he's been dead a long time," he answered. He added that he didn't think an uprising, or another revolution in the Soviet Union was possible or even desirable. "We have been through a bloodthirsty revolution that has cast us into such an abyss, another would cast us further down into that abyss," he said. Ginzberg said he disapproved of the SALT II treaty. "It is dangerous for the United States, but maybe the American people like to live dangerously," he said. SALT II is dangerous, Ginzberg said "because Soviet leadership has regarded treaties as just pieces of paper." The Soviet leadership's idea of SALT, he added, is that "one country should limit its production of weapons while the other side develops them as soon as it can." "I don't really know why the U.S. govern- J j ment is trusting the Soviet government in a matter so important as this," he said. On the question of eventual conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States, Ginzberg commented that the present generation of Soviet leaders were "cannibals in the sense of the word." But, "the younger ones are a little more clever, and their cleverness will stop them from declaring war on the United id jg Exiled Soviet citizen Alexander Ginzberg spoke on human rights in the Soviet Union at Wednesday's Challenge Lecture. States," he said. He added that the Soviets would only declare war on the United States if they were convinced of their superiority, and that the United States was granting them this with surprising willingness.
