Show Tht Dlly Utih Chronicle, Thursday, December Peg Nineteen 6, 1979 For kids, Christmas means Christ, toys, goodies, trees By Beth Barker Chronicle Senior Reporter Department stores are doubling their usual income as shoppers hurry from store to store searching for "just the right thing" to give to that special someone. Mothers busily create sweet concoctions to satisfy the traditional Christmas sweet tooth. Children intently watch Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus is Coming to Town, interlaced with commercials showing baby dolls that laugh, cry and hold their breath and trucks that drive up the wall, across the ceiling, and down the other wall at the push of a button. Christmas celebration, given by 20 members, is typified by Molly Jepsen's answer, "Because Jesus was born in Bethlehem and grew up to he a king." "This is why I celebrate Christmas," Jeremy Manwaring wrote. " starts when a Christ Child was in a manger. Mary was the mother. They came to the manger by pony and a small one too. Thats how I celebrate Christmas." Five students agreed Christmas is Christ's birthday, but added dimension to their answers like Shani Jones', " think we celebrate Christmas because Jesus was born. And because of the Christmas tree. And to celebrate our world." "We celebrate Christmas because of Jesuses birth. And we give presents to be in a happy Bright Christmas lights highlight neighborhoods as Christmas trees sparkle through windows and stockings line fireplaces, awaiting Santa Claus' arrival. Pocketbooks are empty so stockings can be full on Christmas morning. mood and to remember Jesuses birth," according to Matthew G. Clayton. Carrie numbered the answers, "1. Because of the birth of Jesus. 2. And all the toys." A completely different perspective was What's behind all these Christmas festivities? Has the traditional Christ Child figure behind the celebration faded from the picture? With so many different activities going on, why do children think Christmas is celebrated? A class of 27 second-grader- s from Bonneville Elementary School wrote their shown by Anne Shepherd. "Why do we celebrate Christmas," she wrote. "Because the snow falls down. And it looks so pretty. And we can make snowmen with snow. And its the only time we get to put a tree in your house." "I think it is for giving and for having fun," Molli Miller wrote, "and it gives Santa Claus a chans to go out." answers to the question, "Why do we celebrate Christmas?" The most popular explanation for 'Monster ' arrives early, stays late from page fourteen the year, and the parade is a way of preparing shoppers for that big day. Mike Korologos, promotional director for the Salt Lake Tribune, agreed that it did seem like they were lighting the Tribune Christmas tree earlier this year, but in reality that was not the case. To those who feel society is overlooking Thanksgiving by celebrating Christmas in November, Korologos said "what can you do with Thanksgiving, anyway? Do you turn on lights? Do you have a parade?" Korologos recognized the early promotion of Christmas as something evolving over the years into a cycle. "Now which came first the chicken or the egg? I don't know," he said. Pine Save 2- 0- Melanie White, assistant promotion director for the ZCMI Center said their decorations went up on November 16, the same date as last year. White cited the attitude of the people as part of the Christmas rush and the early promotion. "They want to get their shopping down before December hits," she said. She added that Christmas sales percent of the ZCMI Center's gross income each year. "Merchants need to get on with Christmas as soon as they can," she said. If merchants were to postpone decorating and promotion of Christmas until December, White thinks more of a commercial rush would result. constitute 25 Christmas Sale! 50 December 13th. 5th 10"Schefflera 10" Dracaena 10" Ficus Lush Regular $22.50 Marginata Benjamina 3 Plants Per Pot 3V2- '- 4'Tall ' "Weeping Fig" $14.95 Regular $25.00 Regular $27.50 $17.95 $19.95 3- '- 4'Tall 20 10" Bamboo Palm 4' 4V?'Tall 6' Tall Off All 6" Plants Hanging & Floor Dozens Of Varieties Select Baskets Full & Regular $40.00 50 $27.50 Phone Order 488 East 1 st South 5'-- Phone PLANT Off 532-177- 1 , calendar, "Sharing the Arts."
