Deane, the gutsy this past season, was selected by the Utah Jazz in the fourth round. Leavitt, the 6 foot 9 co-capta- in inch reserve, was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the ninin round. Utah fans will remember Deane for his intensity and determination on the court. He was a starter and last year averaged 13.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per two-ye- ar contest. His presence sparked the Utes to many wins during his career. Deane got the Utes off on the right track in the conference race last season with a game against New Mexico in Salt 35-poi- nt Lake City. His selection by the Jazz comes as no surprise as the Jazz were looking for good local talent. He will either play small forward or big guard. Leavitt's selection comes as quite a surprise to many local supporters. He has been a reserve for the past three years, but fans will remember his mastery in the BYU game three years ago. After Buster Matheney was ejected from the game for fighting, Leavitt played a steady game to spark the Utes to the win and the conference championship. His best single game performance last season was a 12-poi- nt nd performance against U.S. International. The Jazz also selected Keith McDonald, a smooth guard, from Utah State. He is an excellent shooter and floor general and he could be a sleeper in this year's draft. In the draft, the Los Angeles Lakers went through the formality of naming Michigan State's Earvin "Magic" Johnson as the number one selection in the draft. The fancy him his colorful name, led Michigan State to the NCAA Basketball Crown last season. He signed a lucrative contract with the Lakers 45 minutes after the announcement. The Chicago Bulls, who are worried about the injury status of Scott May, and if they can sign free agent Mickey Johnson, drafted David Greenwood of UCLA. Greenwood is an excellent rebounder who can make an immediate hit with the Bulls. The New York Knicks, who were not pleased with the efforts of Marvin Webster Bill Cartwright of last season, drafted San Francisco. The Detroit Pistons hoping to shore up a team that is weak, both .
