Show The Daily Utah Chronicle. Friday. December 8. Page Ten 1978 Visit' tepid, old hat rmiyc Tin: from page 8 brand of humor. This interestingly, a more simple-mindewas reflected by the audience's reaction, which, while never far exceeding the level of tepid, wanned up considerably after the intermission. From the time the lights came up this act was consistently more appealing to contemporary viewers. The performances varied in quality. Robert Excel gave an animated spirited interpretation of Kreten by far the best of the evening. Jeri Cartwright turned in a solid portrayal of Ellen Spelding. Douglas Muni, while he made a fine effort and is probably a good actor, was horribly miscast as Conrad Mayberry. William C. Moore, who played Gen. Powers, had little or no voice projection. Director Tom Carlin compounds the problem by having Moore frequently spead away from the audience. Dix Sullivan gave an uninspired performance as Roger Spelding and June Fenn, as Reba Spelding, was even more mechanical than the character she portrayed. "Visit to a Small Planet" is not one of Theatre 138's better efforts. It will be fortunate when the show closes December d) SSC SfiDfXB SUPER SySTImS SUPER PRICES 16. Watercolor artist returning to Utah Sausalito watercolor artist Noal Betts, originally from Utah, will return to the Kimball Art Center in Park City for his second one-mashow in the main gallery. Betts, whose watercolors were exhibited in the gallery w hen the center fiist opened in November 1976, will return to open his newest show, "Wildlife Collection," with a reception in his honor Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. A gallery lecture by the artist will follow. Betts" "Wildlife Collection" will be exhibited through December 28. Born, raised and educated primarily in Utah, Betts' roots are here. The initial response to his work as an artist was in Utah, and many of his early collectors have watched his development. An inveterate traveler, Betts has seen much of the world; his travels have provided him with much of his subject matter. Because of his reputation as a deft portrayer of wildlife, Betts was commissioned by the federal government to do a portrait of the pandas presented to this country by China. He was flown to the Washington Zoo where a special presentation was held. As a designer, painter, lecturer and advisor and consultant to the federal government in many of its fine arts programs, Betts has had one success after another. Both public and corporate reponse to his paintings has brough him personal satisfaction as well as serious critical acclaim. His paintings hang in museums and public galleries in Utah and abroad, as well as in many private collections. The emergence of Betts as an artist has been gradual. His watercolors have won numerous awards, his designs for needlework tapestry have been featured on public television and his series of paintings called "Great Cities of the World" traveled for two years throughout the country. n ,, OA PIONEER KLHj rTKV ortofon - ,,- 1 The System: You can have high performance sound in this component system for about the price of a compact.
