December Page Three 8. 1978 Center encourages holiday care The Intermountain Regional Poison Control Center receives more than 250 phone calls each year about poisonings related to the Christmas season, according to David Spoerke, managing director of ihe poison information service at the I'niversitv Medical Center. "The unique nature of this reason's hazards prompts us to warn the public in hopes that some accidents can be prevented and that those that do occur will be handled quickly," said Spoerke. Many poisonings and accidents which involve children show a definite seasonal variation, he said. "The hazards include seasonal plants, Christmas decorations and miscellaneous items frequently swallowed by children about this time of year." Spoerke said the often-feare- d poinsetta is not dangerous, but holly and mistletoe, even in small amounts, are poisonous and can cause symptoms. "If the type of plant or the ingredients of a product cannot be immediately identified, one should proceed on the assumption that the agent is poisonous and quickly lake appropriate action," the center official said. There is a potential problem as well, he said, with roasting anything but American chestnuts 'over an open fire or using them any other way. "American chestnuts are safe and tasty, but not too attractive," said Spoerke. . "The horse chestnuts, while looking more appetizing, are poisonous and should be avoided." Copies of the Christmas hazards list compiled by the Poison Contiol Center are available. The list does not include problems such as fire and electrical hazards, broken ornaments and dangerous tovs. although the center officials encourage parents to be careful in those areas also. Spoerke pointed out. "Be careful, but have a Merry Christmas," he added. The center can be reached in the The Salt Lake valley by calling toll-fre- e number elsewheie in Utah is 581-215- 1. 5.
