The team is not off to an impressive start. Early season losses to Southern California by 14 points and Oregon State by 18 points have the local fans worried. Our team is missing the consistent outside shooting of Jeff Judkins and Buster Matheney. The good penetrating drives of Michael Grey are also gone. Coach Jerry Pimm knew that other teams would zone defense us to death during the early part of the season. He knew that our outside shooting was suspect and he knew that the point guard situation would be a big question. Two years ago. Pimm had one of the most successful recruiting years in Utah basketball history. His efforts ranked us nationally in the top 10. He recruited Danny Vranes from Skyline High School. He was perhaps the best player ever to wear a Utah high school basketball uniform. He led his high school team to k state championships. Vranes started every game last season as a freshman, something that not even past Luther Burden and Mike Sojourner accomplished. He excited the fans as a freshman with his excellent moves and strong reboundine ability. In the early part of this season, Vranes has done little to hurt his reputation. His great games against Boise State and Utah State left little doubt in fans' minds that Vranes is an candidate. During the recent road trip, his play was good but not spectacular. He matched moves inside against Cliff Robinson and Steve Johnson, two of the best inside players in college basketball. Vranes is a great one. His inside play will continue to improve as the Utah outside play improves. Coach Pimm recruited Tom Chambers from Boulder, Colo. His high school statistics were impressive and he was rated as one of the top two big men in an up year for Colorado high school talent. Chambers played a lot last year and will best be remembered for his excellent Talk back-to-bac- an Thirty-si- x f33 sphere Shipc West PRESENTS offensive play that destroyed BYU in Provo. So far in the season. Chambers has been consistent in scoring, fouling less and playing improved defense. He has great potential and will get better and better. Scott Martin is the other sophomore starter for Utah. He was recruited from Illinois where he was most valuable player in the high school all-stgame. The problem is. that from the day he signed the letter of intent to come to Utah, he has been called the next Jeff Jonas. A player that has Jonas' ability comes along once every 10 years. His ability to control the tempo of the game was An Christmas Program Di 30 STARRING Michael Bennett ar remarkable. Up to now in the season, Martin has not enjoyed spectacular success. He does things in a different manner than Jonas. While he lacks some qualities that Jonas possessed, he makes up for it in hustle and determination. The future is bright for Martin. As he masters the Utah offense, his leadership will improve and his scoring will also pick up. Two years ago, Utah defeated A r izona in the Special Events Center due to a great defensive effort by Williams. He shut down the great Herman Harris of Arizona. Williams needs to score more. During his career here at Utah, he has some good offensive showings. The problem is that during his sophomore and junior year, his outside shooting was not needed. A basketball player with the talents of Williams, is able to adapt to new and challenging positions. Two years ago he was needed for his great defensive ability. Last season he played the first part of the season at point guard. He responded to the challenge well and this season should be no different. His offensive output will improve and he will continue his great defensive play. Greg Deane is the other returning starter from the championship team. Last year was a different story for Deane as he was used as the first player off the bench. His contributions were many, and big things are expected from him this season.
