Twenty-tw- o Women truckers: It's fun1 by JIM SMEDLEV Chronicle staff 7 It's a.m. on a cold November morning. Four people are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a semitruck carrying a new Glassline bass boat. But the four Salt Lakers have been waiting since 6 a.m. for the truck to roll up. The conversation over steaming coffee and sweet and from St. Paul. "We're late because we dune right through Salt I.ake City going west on Highway 80," Suzanne said. "We were going for a while and realized that nothing was out there." "So we pulled over and got some sleep. When we woke up we couldn't remember what direction we had to go." Donna laughed. "The first sign we saw after driving a ways said, Reno 80 miles. So we turned around and headed on back." Both women drove cattle trucks before hauling boats. They both said they liked the job because of the money and freedom, and admitted it was just plain fun. "With me the job is also an ego trip. A guy will do a double-tak- e when he sees us wheeling down the road. Sometimes we'll hMir guys on the CB say, 'Hey did you sec to speculation on the whereabouts of the truck. "I hope they're not lost," said Dianne. "I gave them great directions to the house," Dave replied. "Maybe that's why they are lost," Tom laughed. "They probably sold it to someone else," Paul chimed in. The group's early morning, humor was cut short when Dave veiled "Hold it!" The quiet of the southeast neighborhood was disturbed by the deep rumbling of a motor which could only have been a diesel. Dave sprang to the door and sure enough, a 1978 International bearing seven boats and two women, crawled down the street. Two women! A blonde and a sandy-haire- d brunette the from and cab down said, "Where jumped do you want it?" The boat weighed only 600 pounds, and after they unloaded the accessories from the middle and separated the deck from the hull, its removal from the semi was easy. After the work was done, coffee again became the order as the papers were being rolls ' turns still-aslee- p g -- truck-drivin- those twochicksdrivingthatrig?' " Suzanne said. "Hell, everybody in the truck stops knows you and if they don't, word gets around quickly." Suzanne said the only resentment she meets up with on the road is from the with 30 or more years of trucking behind them, and the wives of old-time- husband-and-wife-truck- teams. She said the old-timer- rs er s hate longhairs, women and rookie drivers, not necessarily in that order. "If looks could kill we'd be dead," g Suzanne said. "Tell them about the one we saw driving on the way into Salt Lake," Donna said. "This one guy's wife was driving," said Suzanne. "She would pass us going downhill and we would pass her going uphill," Donna signed. Both women were in their early 20s. Donna Schwarz was married and from Pine Gty, Monn. "It was a hot summer night in Houston," Donna began. "We rolled in about 7 p.m. and tried to get in touch with him. No one answered the phone until midnight," Suzanne said. "When we finally talked to him he wouldn't give us his address. He said he would come to where we were parked sometime the next morning. When he came bv in the morning, he said he didn't want it." "Aside lioin losing time, the thing which really made us hot was that every time we delivered another Injat we had to take his off first. After unloading the other loat, we had to load his back on, making double work for us," Donna said. "He knew when he ordered it that he didn't want it," Suzanne said. "All to do was to be a sales representative lor Glassline. The women finished their coffee and were anxious to get bac k on the road. They still had five boats on their trailer. A stop in Angeles would take c are of four of them. The fifth would be dropped in Oregon and then they would head back to Minnesota to do it all over again. "Well Mr. Horney (Dave's last name), you are now onlv the third sales representative of the Glassline company in all of the United States," Suzanne said as she headed for the d(Kir. "Sell some boats because we wouldn't mind coming back here. I like driving on these big, wide streets." "That decline there's a sign saying. Hill. Trucks use low gear." It would be more helpful if they put the sign on top of the hill where it should be." Donna and Suzanne said that they have had a couple of close rails in their adventures on the road. "It worries us, but brake failure is something vou have to accept and know how to handle," Suzanne said. "One of us will be sleeping in the sleeper and the driver will yell, 'Hey! Guess what? We're going 90 miles an hour!' " "Whoever is in the sleeper will kind of make a joke of it bv saving, 'I'll give you a quaiter if ou don't kill me,' or something like that," Donna said. "We have computet ied brakes and there are some good things and some bad things with them," said Donna. "If I had a choice of fieewheelin' or getting thrown through the truck's window I would jusi as soon stay with the truck," Suzanne added. "Gmpuieiied brakes are U supposed to release when tiiev 14ft lot. Regular brakes lock up." The women were just about done with their coffee uhen Donna said, "Tell him about the power lines you knocked down, Suzanne." "Oh. just got a linle loo close to one guy's gutter and they came down. It was nothing rnajot ." Suzanne went hark to explaining what was necessary for Dav d to do to become an area representative for Glassline.
