Jim O'Conner, the dim tot of Pioneei Memorial Theatre's (PMT) "A Funny Filing Happened on the Way to the Forum" epitomizes that opportunity. "In lac t. anyone who misses the chance to work with him is a fool. Rarely do ou get so flexible, yet professional director," says one student working with O'Conner. During the past ten eais, O'Conner hasdirec ted more than 10 plays. He presently is employed by the Department of Theatre at Puidue University in Indiana and serves as the artistic director lor their summer season. Although this is O'Conner's first time in Salt Lake, he has directed at Utah State, and many other spots across the nation including the Perry Street Theatre in New York, Theatre Under the Stars in Atlanta, Ga. and the Albuquerque Light Opera Company. "I do a lot of traveling," says O'Conner. "But that's the nature of this business. I just go where the shews are." O'Conner says this is the third time he has directed "Forum." "It's one of the few shows that I could do once a year," he says. "But it's a different show each time because of the different casts I get to work with," O'Conner explains. "I would guess there are about a hundred good 'Forums.'" . O'Conner thinks the key to getting a good production from every cast he works with comes from an understanding of not only that cast but the audience they are playing to. lie also admits the advantage of what his students term as his flexibility; he listens to what thev have to offer. The actors work with know they have to say these lines, which are given to them by the playwright, they have these moves whic h are given to them by me, and now the thing is trying to find out how they can work out. "One of the things I enjoy about the PMT company is that they do their homework so well," O'Conner explains. "For me it's a peipetual Christmas. They all bringin little presents Rent a Stereo $14mo. He decides which present he likes and those he doesn't care for don't go in his show, he says. "A director has to predict what an audience will do at any given moment," he states. "I'm always trying to find a set of stimulants that will bring an audience closer to the play." . But O'Conner says he's not always as flexible as it "Eventually in rehearsals it's 'no, sit one word later than you have, and make sure you're out one quarter body position weight on left foot,'" he muses. "But not now, not in the early stages of development. If you do that too early you may lose your play," he adds. may-seem- Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" opens Wednesday with a free student preview night.
