Show THE Club Woman Of Year f ' Garldnd Club League Honors Meet Set Charter Member charter member of the Garland Civic and Home A Arts Club and the Tremon-to- n Women's Civic League lor 38 years has been named Club Woman of the Year. Mrs. Jack (Mildred) Shumway was selected by the Tremonton Women's Civic League for the honor. She served as the first president of the Civic League and again as president in 1970 - 72. She has been an active member during the 37 years the club has been organized and has served in most of the offices and committees during that :ime. She is the mother of five children: Mrs. M. Reed Hunter (Mary Anne) Berkeley, Calif.; Mrs. Stephen Boyden (Patricia); Mrs. Sanson Jerald (jenei, (Vera Mr. John L. Shumway all of Salt Lake and David L. Shumway, a student at BYU. She has been an active member of her church, served as president of the MIA and Primary and had several teaching assignments. She creates and directs musical programs for both children and adults. In 1975 she created an exhibit' for the "Heritage Arts Festival" in Tremonton and Salt Lake City. She enjoys traveling and golf. In 1974, while president of the local Ladies' Golf where she teaches the attending foreign students. She will speak on international affairs and will give some students' opinions of America. The hostess for the evening will be Mrs. David Kilfoyle. Last month was our Valentine Party with our husbands. We had a delicious dinner prepared by our hostesses, Mrs. Terry Munns, Mrs. Ted Roundy, Mrs. Jeff Reese, and Mrs. Greg Crook. A musical number was given by Miss Gaylene Association, she initiated and carried out extensive members of her club, attended General Federation clubhouse remodeling. She is presently assisting her husband, Jack, in his insurance agency. Mrs. Shumway has served in the Northern District, Federated Women's Clubs as treasurer, recording secretary and president. Some of her club activities include: assisting in putting on three teas for foreign students and faculty in Logan, creating an exhibit on Japan at the State Capitol for World Affairs Day, chairmaned one, and helped with several fashion shows, assisted in promoting and collecting funds for The Bowery. the She chaired Convention in Denver and placed third and $3,000 in GFWC competition. This money was spent in creating a beautiful lounge at the new site for the Bear River Valley Senior Center. She, with members of the 1976 C.I. P. committee, have planned and are now working on the new "Northern Box Elder County Muse- Community Improvement project and scrapbook which won first place in state competition in 1968. She worked for two years to organize a Community Planning and Development Board. While Mrs. Shumway was President in 1972 the Wom-- , en's Civic League placed first in the State Community Improvement Contest for the creation of a Senior Center. It was chosen as a national finalist. She organized a presentation on the project with all participating local groups for the visiting national judges on May 10, 1972. She, with um." She was the first woman to the Community receive Service Award (1963). She is a charter member of Box Elder Women's Legislative Council, President 1961-6has been a delegate from Box Elder County to State Legislative Council yearly since 1957; assisted in creating a museum for 1969 Golden Spike Centennial and spent innumerable hours in manning the museum May through Sept. 1969. She created and operated a thrift store for Migrant families the summers of 1966-6member of the Community Planning & Development Board and 1967 appointed chairman by the City Council in 1968 to the present; appointed chairman of Bear River Valley Council on Aging 1970-7appointed to the "Bear River Health Planning Council" June 1972 to present; appointed, to the The Garland Civic and Home Arts Club's March meeting will be held this Aw It Thursday, March 10, at 8 Pm. in the bottom of the Garland City Library. It will be guest night. Guest speaker will be Mrs. Jerry Buchanan of Elwood. She is an associate professor at Utah State University Shaw. The Tremonton women's Civic League held their spring musical Thursday, March 3 at the Bear River High School choir room. .' President Evelyn Borup welcomed club members and many honored guests. The invocation was offered by Arline Parker and Ann Potter led every one in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lynette Taylor, chairman of the Fine Arts Committee introduced Lynda Poulson, one of the special guest artists. Lynda, who is a former member of the community, recently graduated from Utah State University is presently teaching music at South Cache Junior High. She is very accomplished in music, both in singing and playing the trumpet. She played for club members, "Concertina," a trumpet solo by Whitney accompanied by Vivian Blanchard. Bernice Anderson introduced the Mother of the Year, Mrs. Veda Mason. She was presented with a corsage and a silver platter. She was also presented with a dozen roses from her son and daughters, who were all present with their mates, to honor their mother on this day. Faunice Laub announced the Club Woman of the Year, Mildred Shumway. She was also given a corsage and a silver sugar bowl. Norma Coombs introduced Vivian Blanchard as our next guest artist. Vivian has studied and played the concert piano for many years. She is well known throughout our community for the time she freely gives being the accompanist for many people and several productions, such as The Title of Liberty. She is the wife of Wayne Blanchard and the mother of six children. She played for us, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12. Vivian and , e, Cole Jay Westergard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay D. Westergard of Garland, has received a call to serve in the Disco Dance Slated March 19 "the Persistent parables Widow", and "the Pharisee and the Publican" found in the 18th chapter of Luke. Food items are collected each Sunday at the Church and presented as an offering on the first Sunday of each of By Colleen Garfield A disco dance for all young adults will be held March 19 at the Tremonton Stake Center. According to Scott Reid, Stake Young Adult representative, a disc jockey from a local FM radio station will be on hand. The dance will begin at 8 p.m. A special invitation has been'issued to all high school seniors. Mrs. Norma Ogborn, certified Lay Speaker of the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference, presented a sermon last Sunday, March 6, at the historic Methodist Episcopal Church in Corinne where the Aldersgate congregation meets. Norma shared her personal experiences that have helped in the development of a deep appreciation of her local church as well as for the function of Christianity as an agent of social change. Recent Catholic services held at the Community United Methodist Church have included excellent attendance. The services are included in the Parish Ministry of St. Henry's Catholic Church.
