Norr rates as the top defensive back at the moment, even though he never put on a football uniform in high school or junior high before this year. Little Nolan Hess has put on a show a number of times, as well, and doesn't seem to realize he isn't supposed to be taking on men almost twice his size. The Bears are designing their defense to "contain McMann. I feel if we can contain him we can win." Unlike last year, McMann has only fair speed and size in the backfield to " back him up. "They're not an awesome football team like last year," the coach said. Because they've lost the backs they've changed their offense from the wishbone to the slot-- I where they throw a lot of a good sophomore split end. In "sure" passing situations, the Bears will give up some on the front line to beef up the secondary. "I really think we can win," the coach said. He planned to spend, Tuesday night making up signs for his players' lockers, reminding them of their 50-- 0 humiliation last year. But Roy, like Bear River, has its big strength in its defense so it could be a low scoring affair. "I think if you score three touchdowns you can win easily because I don't think we'll give up more than three," he said. Roy's defense has caused the Bears to do some shuffling too. "We had,to change our offensive blocking assignments because Roy runs a split six defense," Jacobsen explained. The defense makes it tough to "run up the middle," he added. "You have to run the ends or wider." The Bears, as a result, have sidelined some of their plays for the game. "I think Roy has some respect for us that they didn't have when we started," the coach noted in view of their record thus far. About the only thing Weber succeeded in doing against the Bears was getting to the quarterback. Mark Williams got tossed to the turf for about a minus 50 yards as a result. With a bruised hip, Williams could be moving a little slowly in the game. The Bears have been working on giving him more time to throw. An4 Williams has been working on learning , to dump the ball out of bounds to cut some of the losses when they do get to him. Weber couldn't stop the running game. Curtis Kidman carried 21 times for an even 100 yards and two touchdowns. And Chris Webb carried 11 times for 80 yards. The Bears gained only 31 yards by the pass, but didn't need to use it that often, for a total of 240 total yards and 12 first downs. Other match-up- s around the league Friday put Box Elder at Logan for what should be a Bee win; Bonneville at Weber where the Warriors should suffer another setback and Skyview . idle in region play.
