The coach said he would like a junior varsity squad if they could play their games on Monday when the varsity squad's practice consists mostly of looking at game films and loosening up. "But the day before a game hurts us," he admitted. Jacobsen will be assisted by Dick Green, receiver and linebacker coach; Paul Jep-pseoffensive and defensive back coach; and Bill Bingham, sophomore squad coach. Jacobsen will work directly with the offensive and defensive linemen. 'J " - wants to be part of the team. I'll get rid of the starter11who clowns around before 1 g rid of him," Jacobsen noted. New head coach, Bill Jacobsen, fresh from Brigham Young University, is filled with the stuff. The new coach this week unveiled a new weight-liftin- g program that he hopes will turn on football at the school. A new universal gym purchased at a cost of about 13,500 has been added to the weight equipment at the school. The machine was purchased from school funds matched by the district with a sizable donation from the Booster Club. Jacobsen is high on what a weight program can do. At ' Springville, where he assist' ed while in college, a weight-liftin- g program was started four years ago. 4 "In four years they never finished worse than fourth in the state," the coach said. "You can take a 10.5 sprint-- , er and make him a 10.0 flat r sprinter." They have so much they see increases in speed and strength and just feel they can't get beat., and this is the biggest part of is game." Jacobsen said he and basketball coach, Paul Jeppe-se- n would eventually like to see one or two periods of weight training taught during regular school hours as part of the physical education program. "There are more and more kids just in the regular student body who want to lift weights," the coach pointed out. "The new mentor plans to kick off his inaugural season August 2 with a meeting of all parents. Two weeks of practices in the evenings will follow. Equipment will be passed out August 14 at 2 p.m. and lf regular practice sessions will begin August 16. Jacobsen insists he is even more enthusiastic now that he has become acquainted with the school. "I don't think there's as much talent as last year's football team had, but we're going to be good. How good, depends on how fast they pick up a new system." Jacobsen pledges, "We're going to win our share." The new coach has lined up some unfamiliar faces in the ranks for two pren season games and one contest: Untested, the Bears will take on Payson, a team jacobsen feels could possibly be rated number one in the ranks. Cedar City will provide an overnight n trip for the team. The Bears open the season against Logan in the "big one" with hopes of getting revenge for their folding act last year at the end of the season and winning a bid to 3-- A mid-seaso- 3-- A pre-seaso- tournament. 3-- A Spanish Fork, another n team, is on the schedule. "I don't believe in a lot of hitting before game time," Jacobsen revealed, "more mental preparation." August 22 he plans to divide his players in half for a full game scrimmage with fans invited.
