Show HE Speca! Good Cook's Comer f . and kindling on the bottom. Then fill the pit almost full of firewood, being sure to leave free space on each end for air circulation. Put a layer of rocks on top of the wood, making sure that the layer Is about a foot deep and using rathr r large rocks. The top surface of each rock should be about a foot across also. Light the wood and let the fire burn at least six hours, or until the wood has all burned down and all the coals are down below the layer of rocks. If there are any live coals above then, mow them aside and cover with a little dirt. This prevents bottom burning of your foods. Put a layer of wet burlap sacks on the hot rocks and put the foil wrapped, seasoned meat on them and cover with another layer of wet sacks. Pour water on them (not too much) to be sure that they are good and wet Quickly cover the whole pit with a layer of dirt about one foot deep and let it cook at least six hours. W illis says you can do all this in the evening and let it cook all night and it won't overcook because the heat is so well insulated and evenly distributed. He usually uses chuck roasts but has used chicken, turkey, and even fish with equally good results. You can put your meat in foil with your favorite barbacue sauce, or dry onion soup sprinkled over it or just salt and leman pepper. Vhatever seasoning you use, it will be delicious! Virginia mixes the sourdough batter and cuts out the biscuits and Willis cooks them over the campfire in a dutch oven. They are out of this world! Give your family a real treat and try these real soon. , art- - :Jk TO "4 J Willis Petersen Good A Cook's Man Well, move over ladies! We have a man in our midst who can give us some stiff competition in the cooking department. He not only is an accomplished outdoor cook but even helps his wife with a good part of the canning and freezing in the summer and fall. How would it be?!! Our good friend and neighbor, Willis Petersen is in the spotlight this week. Several of the women at our Ward cook-o- ut last weekend suggested that he would be a good subject for a coloumn and he was kind enough to give in after considerable begging and pleading on my part. I think he might be a little publicity shy! Willis is such a good neighbor and friend. He is always ready to help anyone who needs it and always waves and smiles when you pass by. He is unfailingly faith-fu- ll in carrying out his duties and his church work and deserves much credit for his dependability and faithfullness. He was born and raised in Klwood, the He son of William and Mary Petersen. was married to the former Virginia Lee of Ogden in 1953 and also started working for the Soil Conservation Service the same year and is still employed in the local He and Virginia are tlie parents office. of four children: Larry, Kendall, Lisaand Stephen. Willis is very active in church activities and is currently serving as Assistant to the Stake Physical Facilities Director, Cubmaster and as a Home Teacher. His very favorite pasttime is camping in the Unitas and he takes his entire family as often as possible. They all love the outdoors and really enjoy these special family activities together. This devoted husband and father is a deep pit cooking expert and has given us complete instructions for doing it right in our backyard as well as out in the deep woods. Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Bunnell of Tremonton are hajpy to have their cuMghter, Mrs-HFoutz of Las Vegas visiting with them. Leiann brought her daughter Lisa along and their other two granddaughters from Provo came also. Corri and Lon-n- ie came to keep their cousin Lisa company and they are really having fun together. Grandma and Grandpa packed up the camper and took the whole group to Tony's Grove on Tuesday so the children could enjoy the great outdoors for a day or Garland Stake will be host to a region Special Interest Fireside, August 4, at 7:30 at the Belmont Ward.
