He notes that farmers in the country now lose over nine billion dollars each year to insects, diseases and weeds. Yet, Courtney H. Brewer, Utah State University exten- sion rural civil defense leader, emphasizes that the loss could be much more drastic if new or old diseases and pests were purposely spread. Mr. . Finch says, "Guard against such action and against natural spreading of crop pests and diseases. Bring specimens of unfamiliar in sects d or crops to the County Extension Office. They will be identified as quickly and safely as pos disease-damage- sible." Here are just a few exam ples of countless pests that could cause great damage If they were deliberately spread in our country: The golden nematode has cut potato yield as much aa 85 percent in Europe and parts of South America. Gardner, extension home management specialist with Utah State University, hears this question many, many, times. Her answer is, "It depends.", Mrs. Gardner isn't just hedging when she answers the question .that way. For instance, take the question of whether the washing machine you should have a metered" fill or a "timed" fill. This depends on your water pressure situation. If the water pressure is low, a metered fill will be the best choice. A timed fill may result in the water being cut off before the washer is properly The amount of hot water required will depend on the comDinauon of hot, warm and cold water selected for the type of wash load. If the amount of water required, particularly hot water, is important to you, ask the dealer the total water requirements for different machine cycles and how much of it must be hot water. TODD TAYLOR END TABLES fer- Utah State University extension soil specialist, explains that fall f ertilizating has these definite advantages: Fertilizer can be plowed under during fall plowing. It is carried to the root zone by wmter moisture, making it available for crop use as soon as the plants begin to grow in the spring. Since the spring rush often results in temporary fertilizer shortages, fanners stand a better chance in the fall of getting the kind of fertilizer they want. Phosphate particularly gives response in cool greater weather when it is applied on such crops as alfalfa and meadow. It can be applied to the soil any time before winter sets in. In areas where there is no runoff, it can even be applied on the snow. Better results are also ab- tained from fall applications of nitrogen to dryland wheat This is true where there is enough moisture to make use of nitrogen desirable. Dr. Christensen notes that fall fertilizing does present some problems, however. If the land will be floded or receive more than 6 to 8 inches of precipitation during winter and spring months, he says it is not usually wise to apply nitrogen. That is because nitrate nitrogen moves with the water in the soil. On the other hand, anhydrous ammonia can be applied in the wetter regions when the soil temperature drops below 50 degrees. The soil specialist says, in any case, avoid applying nitrogen in any form to areas that are subject to flooding for more than two to three We discount new Kimball Pianos $100 to $400 from Retail Prices Mersman "Tired of the usual spring to get your ground and fertilized, cultivated, planted?"
