Show Thursday October 6, 1S80 The 'Father of Conservation' Dies After 50 Year Career Dr. Hugh H. Bennett, 79, Inter nationally known "father of soil conservation" and first chief of the U. S. Soil Conservation Service, died in Burlington, N. C, Thursday, July 7, 1960, after a long illness. The pioneer agriculturist remained an active worker for good land and water use programs carried out by farmer and rancher cooperators of soil conservation districts since h i s retirement from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, April 30, 1952. In late years, Dr. Bennett allowed himself few idle moments. He studied and wrote about soil and water conservation and land use in the United States and throughout the world. When health permitted, he accepted many invitations for consultation from foreign governments.
