Bears Whip Murray 65-5Fail To Break Jordan Jinx If, 4; By Melvin Barrus Bear River's cagers ended a basketball successful highly with a season night Saturday Coach DURRELL HUGHES win over Murray's Spartans. With this win Bear River finished third in the state, higher in the final standings than either of its Region One counterparts. Ben Lomond was eliminated the second night and Ogden ended up with consolation championship, after a hotly contested win over West. 65-5- 4 BRHS 52 An enviable record has been established by the Bears this year. A loss to Twin Falls in the second game of preseason play, two consecutive losses to Ben Lomond and Ogden and a loss to Jordan in the Fridal night added up to a 18-1955-5- 6 record. Friday's game marked the third time in as many years that the Beetdiggers have been the Bears undoing. First in 1954, the Rivermen met the 'diggers' in the championship game. Larry Hess and Daryl Garn were similarly honored by being placed among the top ten players picked by the Ogden Standard. out-mann- all-sta- te West 46 - Three Riverite BRHS 45 - Hoopsters On Teams All-Sta- te By Johnny Lanb Three of Bear River's hoop aces were rewarded for their season"s hoop play when they were given positions on the team named by the state's major newspapers. received Cullimore Ralph first team berths on the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News selections, while Daryl Garn All-Sta- te and Larry Hess were named to positions on the Ogden Standard Examiner dream team. Cullimore, one of the finest ballhandlers in prep play, did a great deal in leading the Bears to their tourney triumphs, and third place in Class A for the second consecutive year. Cullimore caused a great deal of comment from fans who attended the tourney with his clever ball handling, fine shooting and defensive ability as he "quarterbacked" the fast moving Riverite attack. Garn and Hess, who have played together since the fifth grade, shined offensively for the Bear quintet. The two sharp shooters finished high among the leading scorers in Class A meet. Hess looked especially good in Jordan 49 BRHS 65 Saturday night's tilt with Murray as he hit five out of six jump shot attempts, while hitof other ' ting an assortment shots for 21 points. Although these three Bears received most of the honors, fans cannot the fine play of Ralph Gardner, Max Weese and Clair Eliason. Weese stole the hearts of tourney goers with his tremendous fight and hustle.while Gardner had many great moments. Eliason also showed a great deal of hustle and playing ability under tourney pressure.
