W. Chambers, Secretary of the Utah State Canning Crops Growers Association, states, "It is very important that all tomato growers attend these demonstrations to get up to date instructions concerning handling of tomatoes to reduce possible infestation of vinegargnat, which in the past has caused seizure of portions of the tomato pack by the Food and Drug Administration". Mr. Chamber emphasizes the fact that tomato growers can materially increase their returns by proper attention to picking practices and supervision of pickers so that they will pick tomatoes according o color and degree of ripeness, get a higher proportion in No. 1 grade. Melvin Johnson, local president, points out that the contract prices for U. S. No. l's is $24.00 per ton while the price for No. 2 tomatoes is only $14.00 per ton,. Thus if growers pick more carefully they can get a higher proportion of their produce in the No. 1 grade, and thus receive more total returns.
