Worley Believing we could just step over o the side of good fortune comes with the understanding that ups and downs are necessary in keeping us on the track to success. We give nothing up in believing we can make ends meet as it takes a day at a time to put those ends back together. To grasp the idea of what it is about ourselves that makes Back" things go right, we come to face with what it is that makes things go away. Admitting our "dirty deeds" by: Mildred Yardley makes Beaver use to have a lot of "gangs" throughout the town in the early days. They were known as the "Monkey Flat Boys" east of the highway and "Frog Holler Boys" on the west side. They consisted of the Wilden's, the Patterson's, the improve our circumstances. Commitment is determination on our desires. motivation Any positive a trait within replaces negative us. A positive outlook brings our dreams to hand. Consideration is easy work to what it pays. "Just Looking Cox's, the Anderson's, the Goodwin's, the Nower's and the Yardley's. Usually every night after school, they would get together and choose up sides, and head down to the old John Patterson lot, west of the Ponderosa Cafe for a game of "Kick the Can", then at night would build a big bonfire for a "Jump." Maybe roast a stray chicken from under Billy Wilden's grainery, and also roast Vome rorn "and potatoes." Sometimes it would take them up on Jackson County Hill and play cowboys and indians, or down in the old swimming pool below Sam White's. The most fun the two groups had were the egg fights! the 30's and the 40's, another gang came along. They were the Oakden's, the Manzoine boy's, the Lindsay's and the Wilden brothers that played baseball games, went fishing in the mountains and went swimming in the old Beaver River. Then World War II came along and the gangs just disappeared. The old vacant lot is Later on in empty now. No voices of young boys can be heard. The fishing poles stand lonely in the kitchen corner just waiting to be used again. I can hear the voice of Glady's Oakden telling me how many of her sons were in the War and how she worried about their safety. Yes, old Beaver gangs have all gone away, but the memories are still there. V by LILY ESKELSEN " . t Eleventh Commandment is Never Give Ever. I was Up On A Kid. I've recited it. I taught that. know it by heart, like the times tables, but you see, I was so tired. I was discouraged. And he was pushing. So I almost gave up. I've never quite come to terms with the awkward reality of feeling exhilarated, competent and successful with other people's children and deflated, inept and clumsy with the children who live down the hall. In my classroom I am the prima ballerina dancing an orchestrated choreography of manipula-- " tive charm. At home, I resemble more the jerky stops and starts of a trying to drive a stick shift and my temper smells vaguely of burnt clutch. But even so. I've always known not to give up. I've were kids known that always often caught in an endless loop of repeating old mistakes and ending up where they began and needing to hear the lessons over and over. I've repeated the fight answers again. And again. Then, when talking to the counselor about my child's grades and attitude and work ethic and discipline, something drained. It didn't snap, it didn't crack like the straw on the camel's back. Someone just pulled the plug, and it drained out before I could stop it. I was listening to the bored and flippant youngster respond to yet another question by saying, "I don't see why that matters. I really don't care." And the counselor said, "But I care. Your mother and father care. We're trying to help you." I said, more to myself than to them "I dont know how much longer I can make myself care. I don't know how much longer I can reach out without feeling someone reachmg back. At least trying. . Sometimes.!. tjijak, we'd all be happier if I just gave up trying to help." The counselor understood how I felt, but he wasn't going to let me get away with it. "You can't let your mother give up on you, kiddo. Tell her you dont want her to give up on you. Tell her." He hesitated. He looked embarrassed. But with a little more coaxing, he said, "Don't give up on me, Mom." He whis- - j pered it with his chin on his chest. I know he was just repeating the words he was told. But it plugged up the drain and made me cry. Raising kids is such hard , work. It's lonely work. You tear, your hair out and grow thicker skin and sprout grey hair. But our kids will never make it with- -; out us. We're not allowed to give up. So take a deep breath. Grit your teeth. And never give up. Never give up. Never give up. , A Special Thanks To: Audrey Kent for the dedication she has for the Volunteer program at the Beaver Valley Hospital.
