In that pivotal point, resides both the tragedy and the hope of our current situation. At worst, a child's drug use can paralyze the family's strengths and fragment its bonds. At best, a child's drug useor even the possibility of a child's drug use-c- an stir and mobilize powerful forces for family survival. For there is no stronger impulse in nature, no stronger force in human society than the parents' instinct to protect their young. Onci parents become aware and educated about this threat to their children's health and safety, they then move energetically and courageously to counter the threat. One by one, family by family, neighborhood by neighborhood, parents are fighting back. Let us keep faith in each other and always remember that in every type of society, tribal or urban, there is no greater weapon against the extraordinary power of the modern drug trafficker than the ordinary mother and father. There is a growing menace of drug abuse, and this scourge is capable of undermining not only the physical health of a nation but also eroding its moral and spiritual values. The most vulnerable group to this threat, unfortunately, is the youth on whose shoulders rests the future of our nation. A lot of study and forethought goes into the preparation of these articles, and my most important objective is assisting the parents to help educate their children about the possibility of drug abuse. Most of this work truly begins at the family level, and this sense of caring must be spread to one's entire community, if we are to help our youth resist drugs. Weekends are by far the most popular time for drug usage, and this suggests that the problem of drug abuse is community-wide- , and not a problem that can be solved by requiring the teachers and staff of our schools to monitor situations arising within the schools. The teachers and staff have the ability and willingness to work with parents in the process of nurturing the child into a productive adulthood and performing the task of education, but don't expect them to be experts in treatment and law enforcement. It should be remembered that parents are the child's first line of defense against drug abuse. Parents may be to monitor their children's weekend and week night activities, as these appear to be the most popular times for drug use. Even if a child is not involved with drugs, these would appear to be the most likely times for experimentation to begin. Since marijuana is the mtfst often used drug, teachers and staff need to be alert for signs of student pot use, since before school hours is also a time of abuse. Remember, parents ultimately are responsible for the health and g of their children.
