People and businesses donating to the Beaver High School Sterling Scholarship Fund are: Don Baldwin Conoco Distributing, Beaver Drug, Bradshaw Auto Parts, Heber H. Davis, Paul Anderson, Conrad and Joann Gramshaw, J.R. Ready Mix, Inc., Minersville Feed and Supply, Utah Independent Bank, Ray and Mary Yard-leBeaver Valley PTA, The Spanish Rose Floral, Lynn students reeleven high presenting schools and five districts competed for awards and honors in the Fourth Annual Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar competition, held in the Auditorium at Dixie High School on Thursday, April Ninety-thre- e 15, 1982. Judging of portfolios in 12 separate categories began at 9:30 a.m. Interviews began at 1:00 p.m., with awards presented at the Sterling Scholar Program at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Finalists involved in the final competition were from the following high schools: Beaver, Bryce Valley, Cedar City, Dixie, Enterprise, Hurricane, Kanab, Panguitch, Parowan, and Valley. The twelve categories of the competition included the following: English and Literature, Performing Arts, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Foreign Language, Vocational Education, Business Education, Music, Visual Arts, and General Scholarship. Each of the 96 finalists were judged from achievements and awards compiled in their portfolios and interviews with the judges. There were three judges in each category, and they were from local communities, Dixie, SUSC. and the Utah State Office of Education. A winner and two runners-u- p in each of the 12 categories were announced at the evening program and given a Sterling Scholar Pin. Finalists from each high school received an embossed Sterling Scholar certificate. Each winner received a $200 cash award and each runner-u- p a $100 cash award to be used at a college or university of his or her choice. The Master of Ceremonies for the banquet was Dr. Karl Brooks, Dixie College's Vice President of Community Services and Coordinator for the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar Program. Dr. Van L. Bushnell, Associate Professor, Business and Vocational Director at Southern Utah State College, introduced the guest speaker. Guest speaker was Dr. Gerald R. Sherrat, President, Southern Utah State College. A real highlight of the program was having Paul James, Executive Sports Director, KSL TV News, as the Master of Ceremonies for the Sterling Scholar Program on Thursday evening. Henry J. Jolley, Superintendent of Schools in the Garfield School District, introduced the Master of Ceremonies. Beaver High School was very proud to have two winners and one first runner up.
