Show 12 H2topt 388th to carry Olympic torch Eagerly waiting... FW NCO by Airman 1st Class Naktta Carlisle 388th Fighter Wing PublK Affa rs On one September day, Matir Stf. Curtis SandYrs was reading a local newspaper and read the list of people who were selected to be Olympic torchbearers was going to be posted on the Internet Oct. 4. On that significant day. Sanders searched for his name on the designated Web site and there it was he was chosen to be a torchbearer. "I am excited." said Sanders, 388th logisMaster Sgt. tics Support Squadron Civil Engineer liaiSander Curtis 1 son. "I feel honored. get to represent the U.S. Air Force and Utah." The news came as a surprise not just to Sanders, but to his duty section as well. "I didn't even know he was nominated." said Capt. Bryan Ellis, 388th IiS Civil Engineering Flight commander. "I'm really happy for Curtis. Being nominated and accepted to carry the Olympic torch is quite an honor, something most people never get the chance to do." According to Sanders, he is one of several from Hill AFB who were chosen to be torchbearers. There are also hundreds of people from Utah who will participate in carrying the torch among the many thousands of others across the United States. Sharing his excitement are his three daughters. "My daughters mean the world to me," said Sanders, a Indiana native. "My two daughters who live in Salt Lake City are going to come up and video tape the event and send it back to their grandmother. "My mom is excited and very happy for me as well. She lives back in Indiana." Sanders was nominated earlier this year, by a friend and former Sarah Bourque. "I saw an ad on TV that had a bus driver on it and talked about how you could nominate people," said Bourque. "So, I went to the Web site to nominate him and the rest was his ld tory." In the nomination statement she wrote how his courage in serving the military encourages others, how he has inspired her and how much he loves his daughters. "I totally feel he deserves it," said Bourque, who lives in Connecticut. "I thought he would represent what the Olympics is (all about). He is one of the best supervisors I ever had. Working with him was probably the best time in the service I've had. "During exercises he always had a sense of humor, even in the most stressful times. It was a lot of fun. We always played practical jokes on each other and on others around us." However, "he was always serious about his work but never to the point where you wouldn't enjoy being around him. "When 1 was getting out of the Air Force everyone was telling me I shouldn't get out, but he was always supportive of my reasons and that really inspired me. He is really a genuine and caring person," she added. Sanders, who has been in the Air Force for 18 years, doesn't know when and where he will be carrying the torch, but his route will be of a mile somewhere in northern Utah. He will know for certain sometime in January. After running in the relay, Sanders and the other participants will be able to keep the torch they carried. The participants will pass the actual Olympic flame from torch to torch. "I think I'm going to display the torch in the office for a little while," said Sanders. "I feel honored to take part in a event," said Sanders. "It's unbelievable. It's a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life." Like many other torchbearers Sanders will dedicate his run to a cause he believes should be recognized. "I would like to dedicate my segment of the relay to the victims of domestic violence," he said. "I was watching the news and saw many victims of domestic violence in homeless shelters. Because most of the people in the relay are dedicating their run to the Armed Forces and victims of the World Trade Center, I thought that domestic violence is something that needs to be looked at as well." two-tent- W.
