It's a symptom, not a disease, that turns on the body's immune system. The usual fevers of degrees that all children get are not necessarily harmful. Most are caused by viral illnesses: fewer are caused by bacterial illnesses. Viral infections usually involve different parts of the body sore throat, runny nose, headache and muscle aches. In the digestive system, viruses cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Viruses typically include colds, flu including stomach flu, and cannot be cured by antibiotics. Bacterial infections sometimes follow viral infections and usually affect one area of the body such as sinuses, lungs or an ear. Antibiotics can cure bacterial infections. Most fevers with viral illnesses can range between 101 and 104 degrees and last for two to three days. In general, the height of the fever doesn't relate to the seriousness of the illness. Call for an appointment immediately if the child: Has a fever greater than 100.4 rectally and is less than 2 months old Is under 3 years old and has an oral or tympanic (ear) temperature over 104 degrees Has a fever over 105 degrees (oral or tympanic) Is crying inconsolably Is difficult to awaken Complains of a stiff neck Is unable to swallow anything Looks or acts very sick. by Capt Nancy Ktthley imiji r . Home care for fevers in children over 2 months old includes the use of acetaminophen products. Remember that fever is helping the child fight the infection. Use drugs only if the fever is over 102 and preferably if the child is uncomfortable. Give the correct dosage, according to the child's age and weight, every four to six hours. If the child isn't given enough medication it won't reduce the temperature. Liquid ibuprofen can be used in children over 6 months old. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen f r i o .J a are similar. Ibuprofen's effect lasts 6 to 8 hours, while acetaminophen lasts 4 to 6 hours, making ibuprofen advantageous. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not giving aspirin to children under 21 years old.
