Science fair held May 13 by Carolyn Borl? There was a Science Fair held at H.J.H., Thursday, May 13. Students have been working on science projects for several months. All projects had to be organized using the scientific method. Appearence was also important in the projects. Each project was made into a display using cardboard, posters and models. There were many different kinds of projects. These included; "How to Make an Electric Motor," "Molds and Fungus", "Principles of Airflight," "Proper Tooth Care" "Eclipse of the Sun", "What Happens to Cells When Water Leaves Them," and many others. The projects were put on display in the H.J.H. gym for parents and friends. to see in conjunction with the Fashion Show sponsored by the Helper Junior High Home Economists Department. Quilt contest by Brenda Rachele Each student has been making a quilt block in Mrs. Karen Bertelsen's Home Economics classes. The quilt block is made of cotton material and is 12 inches by 12 inches. The students can either paint or embroider them. The quilt patches can be anything that deals with school. Some of the pictures on them are: a clown holding baloons with multiplication on them, another is a rabbit with six balloons with classes listed, another is the quote "Good books make good friends", In addition to many, many, more illustrations the students are doing. This contest is being held over the United States. There will be 30 winners that will receive $25.00. After the winners are selected, the blocks will be put into a quilt. This will be a Bicentennial Quilt. Good Luck everyone!!! Report cards byKelliFox The Helper Jr. High students are busy cleaning out lockers, handing in books, making up assignments, and worrying about report card time. The Helper Jr. High teachers are very busy making out report cards, getting papers together and getting pestered by the students. All the students and . Band concert by Cheryl Rachele The annual Tournament of Bands was held Thur- sday, May 20, at Carbon High School. The bands from the Carbon County School Jr. High, Mont Harmon Jr. High, Carbon High School, Sally Mauro Elementary, Price District-Helpe- r Reeves Elementary, . All the bands played the "Star Spangled Banner". Awards were given to the individuals who had earned them and the outstanding bandsman of the year. Students at HJH who received awards were Roberta Rigby 1st class; Lori Smout and Cheryl Rachele 2nd class awards; Laura Twehous, Jana Carlson, Diane Taskar, Brenda Rachele, Ginger and LaRae Hamilton, Forsythe received 3rd class awards. There were also many from Mont Harmon that received awards. There were three girls that receoved their master musicians awards, they were Debora Rachele, Jan Larsen, and Miriam Smith. There was an award given to the person that contributed the most to the the public. .The selections that Helper band. The Dodgers beat Kaiser Steel 22 to 2 at Helper field the 17th on the pitching strength of Joe Skerl and the batting strength of Scott Neilsen, Dave Maynarich, Robert Benson, Louis Boindich and Joe Skerl. The game was called after five innings. The Dodgers also beat the Price Giants 14 to 8 at Price field May 20. Dave Maynarich had 11 strikeouts in the winning effort. He also hit a homerun over the leftfield fence. Both played with Helper teams that participated in the little world series of WBBA. They continued outstanding play in the Carbon Babe Ruth league and have been mainstays on the Helper American Legion team where they will continue their baseball activity this summer. Jewkes is a son of Mr. and of Mrs. Rex Jewkes all-st- Grundy and Jewkes are being counted upon in the for the local plans American Legion team this coming summer as the two front-lin- e pitchers. Grundy also plays the outfield when not on the mound and occasionally will fill in at shortstop. Jewkes is a superb first baseman who wields a strong bat at the plate. The all-stgame at Tooele will match the South players from Region Six and Dixie High against the North players selected from Region Five.
