Show The Helper Journal 2 Wednesday, May 26, 1976 Editorial Poison: no good for pet control OUR MOST SINCERE and VVTl Recently there have been several suspected dog poisonings in the Martin area. Residents of Martin are understandably upset by the deaths, and are completely justified at being indignent and suspicious of anyone. Children have been known to die from eating poison. That is not the only problem. Lonnie Johnson, Executive director of the Humane Society of Utah said if a child even handles the poison, strychnine, and then later puts their hand in their mouth, it will be enough to kill the child. Poisoning causes animals to suffer a horrible death. Paralysis, internal bleeding and spasms, are eventually the reward for eating a poison. Poisons are not all bad. They have their place and their use; however, the malicious misuse of such substances should be punished swiftly and surely, and there are laws providing that punishment. A watchful citizenry can be the difference in losing a dog from poisoning or losing a son or daughter. Some animals can become a menace and nuisance, but there are animal control officers who are specifically charged with the task of caring for nuisance or stray animals. Complaints can be filed with various agencies if animals are a bother, but poisoning is a sadistic and crude way to get rid of a nuisance. The law protects both sides of an issue. Pets can and should be controlled but if a complaint does come up, there is a system for handling it and that system is not a few crystals of strychine in hamburger. r T II II ii II II I I II II - After nearly a year of at a coal exploration property located east of Helper, Pacific Gas and Electric Company has announced an agreement to purchase the property for $10.7 million from the Heiner Coal Company.
