"We must take down the feeders so they don't stay," said Yvonna James about the numerous hummingbirds which perch on trees in their back yard. The couple live at 124 3rd East in Helper. She and her husband Earl said they enjoy sitting in their backyard watching the hummingbirds hoover around two feeders hanging from the patio roof. They have counted there's more!" The James' tell about some of their observations of the species. They know that the birds flutter their wings 500 times a second and that the male never feeds the babies. "Their tongue is as long as their bills. It's strawlike," Mrs. James added. They observed that the plain colored birds are females and those with a red spot on their necks or with ruby throats are usually males. The birds came to the James' yard May 1, and according to Mrs. James they will stay until the middle of September. The two feeders must be filled twice a day. The substance consists of one part sugar, four parts water and red food coloring which draws the birds to the feeders, Mrs. James said. The birds do not seem to be afraid of the James' and when the couple approach the feeders "you'll get the birds to look at you right in the eye," Mr. James added.
