With funds the cost being tight, we could to do this and save money in the long run. Q up-fro- nt tk y The Energy Management Office has investigated the use of wind power at Hill AFB. Data was gathered through anemometers located in two separate locations and information forwarded to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It was determined that Hill AFB isn't a viable candidate for wind power generation due to the "trade" winds wind phenomenon we experience flow in various directions depending upon the time of day and season. In this case, a, wind turbine would only be effective during specific hours of the day, not providing a constant electrical power source. To acquire funding for any energy pro- ject, it must meet a 10:1 simple payback of investment to return. Since the cost of electrical power to Hill AFB is very low (industrial rate), the amount of electrical power generated (trade winds) and the high cost for a wind power generation system, the projected simple payback exceeds 20:1. Therefore, under established guidelines, Hill AFB is not a viable candidate for wind generated electrical power. thor-oughl- - Hill A f . Col.
