And the attributes of success like rank and promotion aren't the first ones that enter his mind. Barone, Sacramento ALC executive direc- tor, told the audience about his suc- cesses and how people can achieve their successes at the Persons with Disabilities Luncheon Oct 8, at the Officers Club. At the conclusion of his speech, Brig. Gen. Thomas A. O'Riordan presented Barone with a Utah picture book. Also honored at the luncheon was Dan Gift, the 1998 Hill Outstanding Federal Employee with Disabilities and other award winners. Barone contracted polio when he was five. He said he doesn't remember a lot about his life before that, except he was bike. proud to be able to ride a But things would change. "I remember getting up on the morning of Oct 22, 1954 and finding out in fact I couldn't get up," Barone said. "I remember my brother standing with a pillow in front of me as I tried to scoot down the stairs on my backside, to keep me from falling." There were long hospital visits in store for the little boy as well as learning to walk with crutches and braces. But through all two-whe- el He took a job with the Air Force after college and 13 years later, became part of the Senior Executive Service. He said he rarely talks about his memories because, "with or without braces or crutches, I have never considered myself handicap," Barone said. For Barone, success has never been about money, rank or promotion. "Success has always been being a good spouse, a good father and a considerate human being," Barone said. "Success is feeling good about a job well done and knowing that the people around you share those good feelings about that work. Success is having the love and respect of my family, neighbors and colleagues around the Air Force." Anyone can meet the terms of success, a clerk, an airwhether they're a GS-0men or a second lieutenant Barone said, and they can be met whether someone walks with crutches, a wheelchair or with a seeing eye dog. "Rank or grade is certainly not the hallmark of success," Barone said. "The hallmark is how you feel about yourself at the end of the day. It's more than doing your best If s getting the job done and done well with honor and respect" When interviewing to enter the senior Is it Fragile and Valuable? 're that are executive service, the panel asked Barone what he attributed his success to. He answered, "common sense, that's the first thing." "Secondly, you need imagination and creativity necessary to think of alternatives, to find ways to do what needs to be done," Barone said. "If you're always waiting for someone to how you how to do something, you're also going to find yourself waiting for promotion and successes that never seem to come." Barone said individuals need intiative because their ideas guide and shape our world. And that by accepting personal responsibility, he said, you decide what you want to do and where you want to go. "You also have to dependable and be able to communicate," Barone said. "Because the best idea is absolutely worthless unless you can communicate it to another individual." Having honesty, loyalty and commitment Barone said, is essential because you can't afford to have hidden agendas, talk behind the backs of others and "plant the seeds of mistrust" And if you have a can-d-o attitude, Barone said, "others will forget your limitations unless they are constantly reminded of them by you." An individual must have a combination of all of those things, called balance practice, Barone said. Management is the second key to success, Barone told the audience. He said he told the panel that he credits a lot his success to his past managers. "The deputy director at Kelly realized that he only had two years to teach me as j Expert Handling of Art. Antiques.
