Show 12 " Hilltop July 30. 1998 Ergonomics fit the job to worker's comfort CANVAS & FABRIC ILU by Dianne Ingle Occupational Health Nurse Educator The word "ergonomics" is heard more frequently today than ever before. It comes to us from two Greek words ergo (work) and oi0s(laws). It means fitting the job to the person, rather than the person to the job, through workplace evaluation and design, job tasks, tools and work processes. Most of us think of it in terms of the workplace, but ergonomics is important both on the job and off, no matter where we are. Do you ever have to reach overhead, or perform the same motions over and over again? Do you have to bend, twist or stoop? Are you constantly handling bulky, awkward or heavy items? All of these things have to do with sizes. Platforms can be used for shorter workers to stand on, or blocks can be used to raise the work surface for taller workers. Footrests are available, or can be made from boxes or telephone books. Keyboard, mouse holders or wrist pads can be purchased or fabricated so that the arms and wrists remain in a neutral position. Fitting work to the worker An ergonomic evaluation of the work environment includes the physical set up of the workstation, tools, worker position, use of force, repetition, vibration and temperature. A worker should always be as close to the "neutral" position as possible. The neutral position is standing with both Area's largest selection of scrapboolc supplies! feet pointed forward, about 12 inches apart, with arms at the sides and the SIDEWALK SALE! $ 19S4V0LK knees slightly flexed. If the elbows are bent, the arms and wrists should remain aligned, and the wrists should not deviate up, down or sideways. This does not mean you can't move. Movement and change of position is good for fre-que- nt circulation and for the nerves, however the neutral position should be maintained as close as possible. Work tables should be at the height of the worker's waist. If the work involves using the hands and wrists, they should be supported to remain in the neutral position. Tool handles should reach beyond the palm of the hand, and the head of the tool should be bent, rather than the wrist If force is needed, the tool handle should be long and wide, to prevent the worker from applying force to the palm of the hand. Power screwdrivers should be used whenever possible, as they are better for the wrists than regular screwdrivers. Sharp edges to the work surface should be rounded ar Raided to prevent pressure on the arms or wrists. " There should be no reaching or twisting, and work should be kept close to the body. A light touch should be used, especially when performing repetitive motions, such as when typing or using a keyboard. Chairs should have adjustable armrests, seat pan and back support. The seat pan should not touch the back of the knee, and the feet should rest on the floor. Work should be placed directly in front of the worker, not at an angle, or to the side, to prevent twisting the head, neck or shoulders. Frequent changes of position and rest breaks are important to reduce muscle fatigue and increase circulation. Workstation adjustments can easily be made, and ideas come in all shapes and Thursday, July 30 Saturday, August I cal device available to move them. Portable hoists should be available to move or unload heavy or awkward items, so that the worker has to guide them, NOT lift 66 West 2600 South Bountiful them. Vibration can be avoided with vibration absorbing gloves, vibration absorbing wrap on tool handles, and best of all, tools with built in vibration absorption. 23TTT Public AoDGltira Partial Listing Only!!!
