Depression symptoms in youth come in several forms. Social isolation and withdrawal are frequent. Oppositional and defiant behaviors are also common, as are aggression and delinquency forms of lashing out at a system or systems that are perceived by the child or adolescent as being unfair or unable to meet their individual needs. Anger appears to be a common denominator in much of the depression seen in young people. It's important to look at where this anger is coming from in order to better understand it and, if possible, develop prevention programs and services in order to intervene before the and acting-ou- t negative behavioral - withdrawal symptoms begin to get out of control. Abraham Maslow, professor of psychology at Brandeis University concluded that all people (young and old) have basic human needs. He ranked these needs in a hierarchy ranging vival needs to from basic surwhere 1. Physical needs (food, shelter); 2. The need for security and protec- depression and 3. The need for love, acceptance, and a sense of belonging; 4. The need to feel worthwhile tive (posi- self-wort- ); 12-1- 6 behavior problem, and-o- r depression in young people, we could conclude that one or more of their needs are being thwarted. In my experience most common "unmet" needs in kids experiencing adjustment problems are numbers 2, feelings of insecurity and anxiety about the future; 3, feeling insufficient love or not being an important part of a healthy family; and 4, feelings of low and al self-estee- m "Common Sense Parenting" class for parents interested in learning techniques in dealing with child- hood behavioral and emotional problems, as well as insuring their children grow up to be emotionally well adjusted and responsible members of society. h n. 5. The need for knowledge and under- standing (meaning), and aesthetic satisfaction; 6. The need for wholeness, and attaining one's full potential and satisfac- tion with life Dr. Maslow and his followers found that frustration of these needs leads to unhealthy emotional symptoms, including chronic frustration and subsequent anger. If left unchecked, this can develop into "rage" that can result in severe forms of acting-ou- t or regressive behaviors the recent shootings in some of our nation's schools are symptoms of this extreme form of anger anxiety, Based on these conclusions, it would appear that intervention in the form of providing support education and positive input (responses) in the mentioned areas would lead to less problematic emotional and behavioral problems in our young people. To assist in this endeavor specific programs are available to help parents in their efforts to meet the physical and emotional needs of their kids; as well as for kids to have a support group in which to discuss, ventilate and share issues that are affecting their lives.
