The Air Force Office of Special Investigations on Jan. 1 1 announced a record-settinyear for civil, criminal and administrative recoveries. This record-breakinyear for lost tax dollar monies was recovering a direct result of AFOSI's continued involvement in defense contract fraud. The Air Force expended approximately $41 billion in acquisitions, which equates close to 47 percent of all acquisition dollars the Department of Defense spends. g To Advertise: 394-965- 5 AFOSI in 1992 reorganized to a regional concept, and in the process, detachestablished large mega-frau- d ments in metropolitan areas at the five Air Logistics Centers, and at Air Force installations where large program offices are located. Detachments and operating locations were also established near locations of the Defense Logistics Centers. Experienced AFOSI agents are assigned to these designated locations where the heart of defense contracts are awarded. "At any given time," said Special Agent Mark C. Smith, fraud program manager, "you can find OSI agents r cases or cases imrunning pacting national security. Some of our agents are assigned to assist or lead the investigative efforts to large-scal- e joint task force cases that have been responsible for recovering hundreds of millions of dollars," high-dolla- |
