Show Interfaith service, cream social Nov. 24 pie-and-i- ce and many blessings by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Dennis E. Meson Hill AFB Senior Chaplain Have you heard the one about ... the devout man who decided to join an order of monks that observed a strict vow of silence? Upon joining, he was told by his superiors that he could only speak once each 10 years and then only two words. The new monk accepted these conditions and entered into his life of silent service. After the first 10 years, when asked if he had anything to say, he said, "HARD BED!" The abbot said he would see what he could do about it. After 10 more years, the monk was again allowed to speak his two words and said, "BAD FOOD!" Again, his superior said he would try to remedy the situation. When the third period had passed, the monk said, "I QUIT!" To this the abbot replied, "Well, I'm not surprised You've been here 30 years and all you've done is complain!" A pastoral colleague shared that story with me via his newsletter. It points to a fact of life that it is often much easier to complain about things than to give thanks. That's been my experience sometimes. 10-ye- Certainly, many victims of the summer floods and the recent Southern California fires experienced ple reasons to complain. Yet, amid their tremendous loss and justifiable emotions were amazing words of thanksgiving. Many people, some losing virtually everything, still acknowledged that they had the precious gift of life and each other. Words of thanksgiving mingled with tears of human tragedy. My friends, if we search for things to complain about, from personal circumstances to anxiety and uncertainty about the future, we cultivate a spirit of gloom and doom. How much better to heed the advice of scripture and give thanks in all circumstances, or, in the words of Psalm 103:2, "Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." Sound unrealistic or naive? Easier said than done? Perhaps. We may need to put some special effort into cultivating a thankful spirit. One person I know resolved to make a list of 10 things to be thankful for each day, and then dwell on these positive things. With such an intentional effort, she found it hard jj, TICKETS ON SALE i Saturday, November 20th Time: 8:00 p.m. Place: Ogden 1 ligh School Auditorium ii HSnMning with Wisebird Bookcry 4850 Harrison Blvd. Ugdcn, U 1 479-888U- -j I 1992 FORD BRONCO XLT pie-and-i- f,Ul2& $22,990 JEEP 1992 WRANGLER Hardtop, brigr. red. alloys $13,795 $10,990 $15.990 1991 NISSAN PICKUP DLX 1992 SUZUKI SIDEKICK 4x4 $9990 EXPLORER XLT PATHFINDER SE $12,990 $10,795 621-34- V6, mutt IHI:MrlHIJ.-;.M:l.,',ll.).:Wtotell7- 521-211- 4 dr..
