Show 8 Sept. 9, 1993 Hilltop Times Harassment there, just more subtle still by Don Holman Personnel Directorate The Air Force Materiel Command Inspector General reports that sexual harassment is still a problem at command bases, according to a June 29 letter to the command from AFMC commander Gen. Ronald W. Yates. The IG has been tasked by Yates to visit all AFMC installations and report on the strength of the sexual harassment prevention effort within the command. According to the IG, although blatant forms of sexual harassment have decreased, subtle forms, such as jokes, comments and visual articles are reportedly still present in some duty sections. The IG also reported that personnel from several bases expressed a fear of reprisal if they reported sexual harassment. Yates says in his letter that he finds tion in any form will not be tolerated." Maj. Gen. Lester L. Lyles, Ogden Air Logistics Center commander, also agrees there is still work to be done in his recent letter on the subject. Expressing pride in Hill's advances toward the prevention of sexual harassment, he said, "We must not let our tremendous progress overshadow the work yet to be done." He also adds that he holds supervisors "personally accountable for the work environment they supervise" and expects their "proactive support of this (prevention of sexual harassment policy)." During the past nine months, nearly 13,000 workers assigned to Hill have attended the sexual harassment awareness class, which focuses on simplifying the complex definition of sex- ual harassment and providing guidance on dealing with that problem. Attendance was mandated by Yates for all AFMC workers, in it intolerable that anyone fears concert with the Air Force goal reprisal. "Commanders and supervisors must ensure their personnel are not inhibited in reporting illegal behavior due to fear of retaliation. "Maintaining a strong, viable sexual harassment prevention program continues to be a command high interest issue," the general said. "Discrimina "I want car insurance with of a work place free of sexual harassment. Citing the demoralizing effects of sexual harassment and its impact on the center's ability to compete, Lyles concluded his letter, which endorses Yates' letter, by saying, "The goal must become reality now!"
