Sullivan Social Actions Office Irrespective of. personal opinion, sexual harassment is a violation of federal laws and Air Force policies. The message is, "Don't do it." In the past nine months, nearly 13,000 people at Hill have attended sexual harassment awareness classes mandated bv Gen. Ronald W. Yates, com mander of the Air Force Materiel Command. The classes have been held to raise employees' awareness of what is and what is not considered to be sexual harassment and to give instructions to employees on what to do in case of harassment. More than 30 civilian and military employees recruited from organizations basewide formed the instruction team. The messages the team disseminated were: D Everyone has the right to work in an environment that is free of sexual harassment. SEXUAL HARASSMENT D Sexual harassment takes many forms. A common misunderstanding is the belief that sexual harassment exists only when an employer demands or expects sex from an employee in order for the employee to keep his or her job. While this is one of the oldest known forms of sexual harassment, IS NO JOKE it is not the only kind. Any unwanted behavior of a sexual nature may constitute sexual harassment, including sexual jokes, remarks and innuendoes, physical gestures, inappropriate touching, written or printed notes and cartoons, magazines, posters and gag gifts. Instructors report that teaching sexual harassment prevention and awareness is not an easy task because it seems to arouse a wide range of emotions and attitudes from apathy to blatant hostility about the issue. However, team members report that most of the remarks and critiques they've received about the course have been positive. The class focuses on simplifying the complex definition of sexual harassment by use of examples, scenarios, group exercises and discussions. Techniques were taught to deal with sexual harassment, such as confronting the harasser with a strong message of disapproval, asking management for assistance, or filing a complaint with Social Actions, or the Equal Employment Bldg. 555, Ext.
