Show 10 July 29, 1993 Hilltop Times Recruiting group moves to Hill from California L -- J - A After 35 years at Mather AFB, the 372nd AF Recruiting Group pulled up stakes and moved to Hill. A ribbon-cuttinceremony is scheduled for today. "" i g by Frances Kosakowsky 1 . 1 " "" II Til Getting settled Hilltop Times staff Bldg. 1205 at Hill is now the hub for Air Force recruiting for 17 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as for Guam, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. The 372nd Air Force Recruiting Group recently resettled at Hill from Mather AFB, Calif., where it had previously been located since 1958. Mather is being closed as part of the overall DOD downsizing initiatives. The headquarters group brought 14 new jobs to Ogden Air Logistics Center with the possibility of more billets becoming available this year. "We had originally planned to relocate to Williams AFB, Ariz., but it too is being closed," said Col. Ronald L. Pierre, group commander. "We considered several other bases and Hill most closely met our needs. It's near enough the center of things so we can reach any of our recruiting squadrons in one day and there was space available to accommodate us," he said. Another advantage Hill offers is an airport that is a regional hub for recruiting activities throughout the western part of the United States and the Pacific Rim, which are supported by the 372nd Group Headquarters. "We have six recruiting squadrons reporting to us that are spread throughout the West: McChord TSgt. Frank Voelker, NCOIC, Personnel Programs (left), and TSgt. Rick Altstalt, NCOIC, Information Systems Division, 372nd AF Recruiting Group, pitch in to set up equipment for new headquarters office. To mark the opening of th new head quarters, a ribbon-cuttin- g ceremony h scheduled for today at a.m., Bldg. 1 20$ Brig. Gen. John Mu McBroom, com mander, U.S Air Force Recruiting Service and Air Education and Training Command, will be ort hand for the ceremony, as will the Ogden Air Logistics Confer commander, Brig. Gen. Lester L. Lyles. il AFB, Wash.; McClellan AFB, Calif.; Los Angeles, Calif.; March AFB, Calif.; Denver, Colo.; and one at Hill," he said. "The 372nd has a proud tradition. We've been an intermediate recruiting group since 1954. "The base closure process that's happened in the military has really had some dramatic impacts on people all over the United States," Pierre said. "One of the good news things is that some of the bases have gained some significant missions. The mission that Hill gained with the 372nd is a region al mission that encompasses virtually the western United States for Air Force recruiting activities. "We can book recruits into the Air Force here at the group. That is, recruits can decide what they are going to do for jobs and plan for careers," Pierre said. "All of our squadrons can do that as well. "We have roughly 300 recruiting offices spread throughout 15 western states, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, Guam and Korea." Pierre said that despite the downsizing of the military, new recruits will always be needed to replace those leaving the service. He said the Air Force has always had the highest qualifying standards of any of the services and will continue to do so. "We still have jobs that need to be filled; we just have fewer than before," Pierre said. "We are at the point right now where we are pulling in really highly qualified people. That's because with the lower number of jobs we have available right now, the competition for those jobs really demands a high degree of mental capability. "What we're finding right now is that the quality of Air Force applicants is exceptionally high," Pierre said.
