Barbara Fisher Hilltop Times staff Friday was a day Dave Burton and Pam Hutchins won't soon forget they talked with and had their photo taken with President George Bush. The two Hill workers were among a group who greeted the president Friday upon his arrival at the Utah National Guard headquarters adjacent to Salt Lake International Airport. The president visited Utah to give a speech at Brigham Young University Saturday in Provo. Burton and Hutchins were invited by the White House to meet the president as representatives of Hill AFB's Students and Tutors for the Advancement of Reading Skills, or STARS, program. The STARS program was selected by the president May 30 to receive his 786th Daily Point of Light for the Nation. STARS is a group of volunteers, both military and civilian, who donate one hour each week to tutor and mentor an k student in the Ogden The tutors take School District. City time off from work to help the children time they must make up before or after work, or during lunch. Burton and Hutchins, STARS president and vice president respectively, were two of the original drivers behind the successful tutoring program that started in 1990. Yates, the new cdmmander of the Air Force Materiel Command, arrived at Hill Tuesday to familiarize himself with one of the 19 installations he has led since July 1. During his Hill visit, Yates toured various facilities, received briefings on several Hill missions and held two commander's calls with workers. The general also will attend the Vision Conference today with all of the command's logistics center commanders. The conference will be held in the Poe by Jay . i i ' 4 . v' '' Tuesday after his arrival, Yates presented Outstanding Unit Awards to three Hill squadrons. The three the 2849th Civil Engineering Squadron, the 2701st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron and the 2952nd Combat Logistics Support Squadron received the awards for their service at Hill and in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. Hill officially stepped into the alternative fuel vehicle program on Tuesday, becoming the first federal organization in Utah to receive new factory-buiNatural ' ' ' ' ' lt powered vehicles. At a ceremony outside the Federal Building Plaza in Salt Lake City, Col. Steven R. Emory, commander of the 2849th Air Base Group, officially accepted the keys to two of the special vehicles. The base will receive eight of the 13 vehicles which the General Services Administration will distribute to federal agencies in Utah this year.
