Ridley Altus AFB, Okla. loose tongue can be a major cause of conflict simply because it was put into motion before an individual took the time to engage the brain. When we allow our tongues to wag at the wrong time, we allow the wrong words to come out of our mouths. Military members and civilians must be especially careful of what they say. M "Threats and punishment didn't work' the commander admitted, "so I had to use the ultimate weapon. I wrote his mother." The following poem illustrates the lasting influence of mothers on their children: The influence of a Mother A mother took a piece of clay And idly fashioned it one day. And as tier fingers pressed it still, It moved and yielded to her will. mmollata odd : iry A common problem, found in almost every organization but ' tolerated in none, is the use of racial, ethnic or sexist slurs, jokes or other disparaging comments. The policy is clear: such disparaging terms or jokes aren't acceptable and will not be tolerated in the military . It's hard to believe that many people believe racial, ethnic, sexist jokes and slurs aren't harmful and shouldn't create an offensive environment. They believe that such things are told in jest and used as time She came again when days were past; The bit of clay was hard at last. The form she gave it, still it bore, And she could change that form no more. She took a piece of living clay, And gently pressed it day by day, And molded, with her power and art A young child's soft and yielding heart. She came again when years were gone; It was a man she looked upon. He still that early impress oore, And she could fashion it no more. Author Unknown I've heard people say this belief is wrong. They believe people fillers. This isn't true. To focus on another point, ask yourself how you'd feel if the comment was directed toward you, and how long do those feelings last? Some believe that after an apology, the offended person will be all right and hard feelings will suddenly go away. This is not true. To add insult to injury, don't use racially derogatory terms now this is 1990. Again, this is untrue. I know because I hear complaints almost every day. Solving the problem is simple. The solution rests with all of us. We need to control our tongues and make sure others do the same when it comes to racial; ethnic, sexist jokes or slurs. We are the solution to the problem and by working together we can solve this problem, which has no place in our society. , others think that if the offended person doesn't accept the apology, then something is wrong with that person. Stop and think how you'd feel if you were the brunt of the joke or racial slur? The residue of hurt and frustration can last a long time and can be passed to other people.
