Show 12 Hilltop Times ACTION LINEEXT. 77000. Jan. 19, 1990. Now machino is noodod Unsafo waiting at There is an gate extremely dangerous situation on the 0 machine in freeway when approaching the base from the south to enter the West Gate. The cars are lined up in the emergency parking lane of the freeway and it takes 10 to 12 minutes to get on base after entering the line It is a very precarious situation to try to manipulate your vehicle into the line when it comes up sooner than is anticipated. I realize the importance of security on the base and ensuring only authorized cars enter; however, it is very dangerous for the people sitting on the busy freeway waiting get on base. Can something be done to get the people off the freeway faster? J I am aware of the traffic problems you mention and share your safety concern about people sitting on a busy freeway awaiting their turn to come on the base. Because of the wide variety of missions conducted here, Hill AFB is a closed base and, therefore, no person has unrestricted access to the base. The security police do everything possible to expedite traffic onto the base during these busy periods. I urge all vehicle operators to exercise caution and common road courtesy to others, especially since our roadways were not designed to handle a large volume of traffic in such a short period of time. Safety and security are both important; however, we don't have to sacrifice one for the other. You may want to look into using one of our other gates that does not back up onto the freeway, or start for work earlier. . The quality of tissue paper they have in the rest rooms here on base is terrible. The hand towels are softer. Can something be done to get a better quality for us? Q but the tissue paper is centrally acquired through a General Services Administration contract. We have voiced the concern to GSA and hopefully the tissue quality will improve. But it probably won't happen in the near future. Sorry. I agree, ly e Thank for taking the time to recognize our do. work sure the It great they operators for makes their day when they receive a thank you such as this. They are a dedicated group of people who take great pride in their work. I think they do very well and I'm glad you think so also. I have an "atta boy" for a security policeman, Amn. Lisa Washburn. She is very polite, helpful and kind. She knows her job and does it well and I think she should be recognized for it. QI " - . Thanks for telling me about Airman Washburn. She's just one of the great SPs we have here at HilL She has been recognized with a letter of appreciation as a result of your call . Crossing hazardous to pedestrians A potentially dangerous situation exists along 6th Street by the Occupational Health Center. In the early morning commute times when it is dark and traffic is heavy, people cross this street mcUscriminately. Be- cause of lack of lighting along this street and the lights of oncoming cars, these people are extremely difficult to see, especially when they are wearing dark clothes. Can some effort be made to encourage these people to cross at designated crosswalks? I'm . I can understand your being disturbed about derog-atory comments made about your employer. Unfortunately, there will always be those people who do not understand or appreciate your contribution to the quality of life at Hill AFB. On the other hand, not all employees share your enthusiasm for hard work, and you must understand that we all can and should express dissatisfaction-wheservices received are not up to expectations. You should be proud of your performance and take pride in knowing that these complaints are not prompted by anything you have done. I hope this reminder helps. A I share your concern with pedestrians crossing our streets in darkness and not using the crosswalks. As the majority of these pedestrians in this area work in the Directorate of Maintenance, I've asked MA to re- remind their personnel to use the crosswalks. I would . hope that our vehicle operators and pedestrians use extreme caution and patience while driving and walking to work on our streets during hours of darkness. y r n Use care Q Occasionally we on time Open gate Gate was late The Roy opening four times in the weeks. two Today it was 10 minutes late past and was cut off and traffic backed the freeway opening up down into Roy. Would it be possible to have the early so they can get the gate guards arrive five minutes ' i 6 a.m.? at open right Thank you for your call. I regret the inconvenience yi you suffered and have directed the security police their have to guards arrive 15 minutes prior to opening ? , the gate. " at crosswalks There is a problem with speeding cars at the blinking light crosswalk by Bldg. 1299. Pedestrians have had several near misses when crossing the street there. Could we have some help, please? selling not permitted notices that tell us employees get are not allowed to sell things on the job for personal gain. The supervisors in our shop are selective about who is allowed to sell and who is not. I think they ought to enforce the policy for everybody or allow everybody a free shot at it. Can something be done to straighten out this discriminatory practice? The policy letter issued by the base commander rlL concerning unauthorized selling on Hill AFB, dated March 18, 1988, is very clear. As a result of your inquiry, this policy letter has been disseminated throughout your work area once again and supervisors will assure that, their employees are complying with the policy. AH personnel have been briefed, and appropriate action will be taken against any person who continues to engage in sales activity, or any supervisor who tolerates it. Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. Q You are correct, the BX did not have an adequate number of Seiko watches in stock at the beginning of the sale. Unfortunately, the jewelry counter-employedid not advise management that a confirmation was not received after the order was placed. The Seiko watches are now on their way and rain checks are being given. I. apologize for any inconvenience you may have ex- perienced as a result of this. yi r es . Thank you for your call. As I've said before in Line, it is a driver's responsibility to stop for pedestrians who have entered a crosswalk, and drivers will be cited by security police if observed. A pedestrian, on the other hand, should not enter a crosswalk suddenly in front of oncoming traffic, expecting them to stop. If you are in the crosswalk and a vehicle fails to stop or almost hits you, get the license plate number and report the incident to the security police. You will be asked' to report to security police headquarters, Bldg. 1219, to file an incidentcomplaint report. I assure you they will investigate the incident and take appropriate action. Meanwhile, no one should be in such a hurry that they shouldn't drive and walk defensively. J " Ac-tio- n Raise speed limit north of 1200 area the G. The it 30 mph speed limit north of the 1200 area to railroad tracks seems to bog down the traffic, Would be possible to raise the limit to 40 mph in that area because it really is a traffic hazard? ' r The 30 mph speed limit north of the 1200 zone to railroad tracks is for safety of pedestrians and vehicle traffic in the area around Bldg. 1400. We have looked at this area several times and the speed limit in that area must remain at 30 mph for the safety of personnel who work in that area. Our base traffic planner, Mr. Clements, at Ext. 77871, would be happy to discuss this or any other traffic question you may have. 4 the Video could help retirees Action Line column There was an article in the seminars. The thrust of concerning the article was that due to fiscal constraints, the semi-- : nars would be discontinued. I'd like to suggest that if one more could be held that it be video taped. Then personnel could go to the Consolidated Base Personnel Office and view the tape. If it isn't possible to hold a seminar, then possibly a video answering the more frequently asked questions would be helpful. Q pre-retireme- Thank you for the idea. However, as a result of ex-- r pressed interest and another Action Line call, the personnel office developed and conducted two preretirement seminars using volunteers on Nov. 14 and 15. Almost 1,000 people attended them in the base theater. Because of the excellent feedback we received, we Will seminars each year. conduct at least two of these Since we found a way to continue providing the seminars regularly, a video tape does not appear necessary. . yi Q. and tired of people cutting our company down. A driver was coming out as I was going in and we couldn't see each other because of the illegally parked cars. It's a dangerous situation. Could you have the security police patrol there and issue some tickets to get it under control? , I Thanks for the call. The security police will monitor this lot and. issue citations to violators who are illeJp gally parked. If you observe this problem again, please contact the security police directly at Ext. 73056 so they can take immediate action. ' QI When I went to the BX to buy a Seiko watch that was advertised in their Christmas special, I was v told they were all sold out. When I asked them when they would be getting some, they said maybe later. I then asked how many they had and the reply was one. How can they advertise something like that when they have only one available for sale? Q I would like to compliment the base operators, those on swing shift. I have occasion to deal with them and they have a very professional, caring and friendly attitude. I was recently on temporary duty at another air base and the operators there were grumpy and rude and very sharp on the . phone. So it was a very nice feeling to be able to call to Hill' AFB and get an operator who was truly concerned and willing to help me with my problem. The embossing machine you describe has been in service for only three years and has a life expectancy of at least five years. However, that machine (as you note) has been prone to failure and your NCOIC submitted an equipment purchase request for a replacement earlier this year. You'll be pleased to know that the machine has been approved by the hospital's Equipment Review Board, and the new embosser, being computerized, promises to be a significant improvement over that currently in use. It is being programmed for funding and procurement during the fiscal year. Thanks for your concern for better service to your customers. calling ACTION LINE. Reduced prices have fueled the rumor. There are things that could be done to improve attendance so they won't have to close it. They could make the movie ad in the Hilltop Times stand out more by highlighting it so it would catch more attention: Also, if they could show the movies closer to their release date they could compete better with video tape rentals. - 1 There has been discussion about the poor atten-dance of the theater, but it will not close. We are Force Exchange Service to doing things with Army-Ai- r improve attendance; however, the price reduction is a nationwide effort and is not limited to Hill AFB. We talked to the Hilltop Times and they explained that all agencies would like their articles highlighted but in the interest of fairness, no preferences are given. The release of movies is tightly controlled by the industry. AAFES continuously tries, to get earlier release dates. When the movies are released to AAFES, they are shown immediately. Thanks for your call. y 1 - Drivers should use signal lights Could an article be published to encourage people to use their signal lights on base like they should? When they don't signal it makes it very difficult to make turns. Q I Thank you for the calL You've made a good point. 1 It's not only courteous, but vehicle operators who fail to use turn signals when required could be cited by security police.
