Much of the effort has been self-- ' help, with focus on facility improve-- : ments at the site's recreation center and headquarters buildings, said Maj. John Clark, range commander. Last April, it was decided that the Oasis swimming pool area needed a complete renovation. Major Clark said the pool was sound, but the surrounding concrete coping stones, deck and fence were falling " - : m. , .... ..hi. vt,iM:::mmmmmmi ; apart. Also, the swimming pool heater, filter and pumping mechanisms were suffering from exposure to the desert elements because there was no structure to house them. People from the support squad-- : ron's various sections, civilian and military, sat down and mapped out a strategy to rebuild the swimming pool area. The concrete deck was torn up and replaced by a new and im ac-o- a proved deck layout, and a structure was built for the heater, filter and pump. Volunteers laid sod next to the deck to enhance the beauty of the area. To make sure the sod would live in the arid climate, they installed an underground sprinkler - .' system. The plank fence surrounding the pool was rebuilt. It was enlarged and painted. Lights were installed so the pool can be used at night. A swimming pool cover, coping stones and a hot tub spa were purchased through base quality of life funding. The swimming pool cover was installed to keep dirt, tumbleweeds and insects out of the pool. The cover also insulates it for energy savings. The hot tub spa was installed so that workers stationed there can rest and relax after a hard day's work out in the West Desert, more than a hundred miles from Hill AFB, said SMSgt; Juan Cruz, first sergeant, support squadron operations.
