Rocky Raab Hilltop Times contributing writer The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources last week stocked almost 25,000 channel catfish in the north Jordan River. fi-s- h. 'emper I had an interesting and educational oh. all right, humiliating experience on Causey Reservoir a couple of months ago. You remember the weekend of weather? Well, since it was too cold to take the family skiing as we had planned, I went ice fishing instead. Up at Causey the weather was sunny and mild. Heck, you could go 40, maybe 50 seconds without skimming the ice off your fishing hole so the line wouldn't freeze in place. Anyway, my wax worms were frozen solid, so I was offering salmon eggs on the bottom right off that point opposite the dam. A good method in a good spot, right? A long hour later, here comes this big guy with a three-legge- d dog out onto the ice. He sets up, drops a line and then plays with the dog a while. r, I think Hardly a serious to myself. When the dog gets tired, over to my hole comes Mr. Playful. Did I ice-hole- mention we're the only ones out here? He introduces himself in the : river meanders north from Utah Lake in Utah County through the west side of Salt Lake City and empties into The usual way: "Getting any?" I hesitate to answer, as you might guess, then admit that I hadn't caught any trout on salmon the Great Salt Lake. "Eggs?" says Mr. Playful. (Yes, I do remember his name, but I'm not using it here, for reasons you'll see.) "I'm just using worms." Well, shucks, anybody but anybody knows that trout won't hit worms under the ice, so I point this out. He doesn't respond to my helpful hint, just walks back to his rig, maybe 200 feet away. I'm staring at my rod tip again when I hear him sort of bellow. I look up and Mr. Playful is landing a nice trout. Then he packs up and comes back my way. Without a word, he drills a hole not 10 feet from mine, baits his jig with a quarter of a nightcrawler and lowers away. Halfway to the bottom, he stops the line and bellows, "PREPARE TO BITE...BITE ! " Tug reel plop. One trout. " I'm open mouthed, which isn't overly clever at that temperature, and stammer out some sort of . -- ttdl&k ATAX caw VwjamTOi? GET YOUR MONEY FAST! The division hopes the fish will adapt well to their new environment and grow quickly. Doug Sakaguchi, a DWR fisheries biologist, said the fish should reach catchable size by "There is plenty of feed for the fish, and if the water temperature warms up enough, they should grow well," he said. The catfish stocked last week were released at several locations along the northern part of the river, between 2100 South and 1000 North.
