More than 245 people attended the Native Ameri- canAlaskan Native Week luncheon hosted by Jacque Larsen, Hill AIAN Program manager. Special guests included Maj. Gen. Robert P. McCoy, Ogden Air Logistics Center commander; and Harry Burk and Lula Red Cloud, guest speakers. Mr. Burk and his wife talked about the problems still facing American Indians. These include high unemployment, especially on reservations, how Indian children were forced to live in boarding schools and not speak their native tongue and some misconceptions about Indians. "Most Americans, while they may not know much about Indian culture, tend to hold a special 'something' for American Indians that they do not have for other minority groups in America," Mr. Burk, a staff representative for the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, said. "But, the American public has difficulty believing that injustice continues to be inflicted upon the Indian people. They assume the simple feeling of tolerance they feel toward Indians is somehow transferred to government policy that deals with Indians. That is not always the case," he said. "American Indians make up less than 1 percent of the American population, but there's no ethnic group anywhere prouder of this country and of our service to it," Mr. Burk said. Mr. Burk also thanked General McCoy and Ms. Laursen for their continuing efforts to improve the Hill AIAN program. meal of Luncheon guests enjoyed an Indian-stylIndian stew, prepared with turnips, potatoes, corn and onions; fried bread and wojapi (blueberry pudding) specially prepared by NCO club chef Nick Hall. e 26th Annual THE BOSS SAYS: we'll make you an offer you can't refuse!
