Hallway Itrake Problem. Iii the history of railroading a most difficult problem has been that of stopping cars quickly when under high epfd. It is this problem that now confronts the electric car managers. It in admitted by Electrician Pearson, of the West End company, that the cars cannot be suddenly stopped by the same motor that propels them without danger of serious injury to the driver and the passengers, to say nothing of the motor itself. The same problem for many years baffled all inventive genius in steam railroading. Finally the invention of the air brake seems to have solved it, at least to the extent that a train can be stopped as rapidly in an emergency as passengers can safely bear the shock. In the nature of the case the same agent and the same machinery which produce momentum are able to reduce it with the same facility. The application of this fact has proved an approximate success on steam railways, but Mr. IMirson, as reported, practically admits that it will not always work without danger in the case of the electric motor, and that the motor men are enjoined from applying it, except when, in their judgment, the emergency is supreme. Hut although the cars are now propelled electrically and stoppil mechanically the problem is bound to yield to the boundless resources of invention, and the West End company is pursuing it lirelesr.lv. The feasibility of a vacuum brake which can utilize the rotary motion of the car wheels is now a subject of experiment, and either this or some other substitute for hand power in stopping the cars will yet be made a success.
