Is 1 'M ill! ,rTj, 1 1 Af The purpose of the facility, located at the Army's Area Support Center just minutes from the McDonnell-Dougla- s plant in St. Louis, Mo., is to put the jigs, fixtures and other tooling for the venerable aircraft into "dead stock" for future use in the manufacture of spare parts. "It's a pioneer program," said Thomas Clegg of the directorate, who served as chief of the team from the directorate during their stay in St. Louis, Sept. 15 through Oct. 31. II-er- The center is providing some 126,000 square feet of storage space for the project, which should save the Air Force substantial money over shipping" the tooling elsewhere, according to Army Lt. Col. Robert A. Fortin, commander of the center. "We've tried to provide total support for what they're doing," he said. Mr. Clegg said that the facility, once in operation, should require only one or two people to maintain inventory control. No production will be accomplished on site, but contractors would draw materiel for use in accomplishing contracted work in their own plants. "It's really worked out well," Mr. Clegg said of the trip. "The civilian and military people have worked well together, and the Army has been very supportive." S o '.V.
