Show HILL TOP TIMES 4 Fridoy, November IS, 198S news Firefighters to get new suits Air Force firefighters soon will wear new firefighting ensembles that offer better protection from chemical agents, are lighter, wear longer, and provide more oxygen than their current firefighting outfits. The Fire Protection Research Center at the Air Force Engineering and Services Center at Tyndall AFB, Fla., currently is testing the new ensemble which includes a chemical warfare undergarment, outer garment, breathing apparatus and a helmet with a communication ' system. According to Wade Grimm, project officer at the center, the new ensemble is expected to be available by late 1987. Mr. Grimm explained that the new ensemble is needed primarily to meet today's chemical threat to firefighters in a wartime environment. Also, the old firefighting suit contained asbestos and was outlawed in 1979. Since then firefighters have been wearing interim suits, which also would not protect them from chemical agents. While in garrison, the 729th TCS and 84th TCF air weapons controllers will control 388th TFW aircraft missions to maintain proficiency. The 84th TCF is designed to provide radar surveillance and control near a battle area and to later extend into the battle area if needed. A small, highly mobile unit, the 84th TCF also observes a worldwide mobility commitment. The combined annual operating budget for both units is about $2 million when equipment and a military force of more than 300 are in place. The 729th TCS will be in the 1900 area; the 84th TCF will be at the Little Mountain Test Annex. The 602nd Tactical Air Control Wing is the parent wing of both units. Col. Wilson, are Tactical Air Command mobile radar units with the 729th being the only mobile Tactical Air Control System squadron in 12th Air Force. The TACS fills the needed requirement for the TAC Commander to have one centralized system to exercise control and monitor assigned forces. Among its diverse functions, the 729th is capable of detecting and identifying hostile airborne objects, directing weapons systems and designating defense warning conditions.
