Ahlstrom "Caveat emptor" is the principle that the seller cannot be held responsible for the quality of his product unless guaranteed in warranty. In other words let the buyer beware! To inform and educate military personnel about some of the hazards consumers may encounter, the Preventive Law Office in the Pentagon cited the net sales of a chain of stores that directs its advertising to junior military members. In two years the net sales jumped from about $200,000 to almost $23 million. Investigation showed that some military consumers paid two to three times the average retail price of an item just so they could buy it on "easy credit." So "caveat emptor" is especially appropriate for military members. One very important one is the Truth in Lending Law. One vital part of this law requires all lenders to spell out clearly the true interest costs and other finance charges you are paying for all types of loans or credit sales. The law applies to virtually all consumer credit transactions. There is no longer any need for the consumer to "get taken" if they read what they sign. And that is only one small portion of the consumer protection laws that are on the books. Remember, there are plenty of people urging you to buy, either through cash purchases or on credit. Most of them are honest, some are not. So consumers take heed. Ensure you get the best for your money the best quality, the best service, the best deal. Shop wisely. Think before you buy! Caveat Some psychologists consider the ability to postpone pleasure when necessary as the highest degree of maturity. But all too often, a lack of maturity prevails and caution is thrown to the wind. In their rush to "grab the chance for easy credit," consumers sometimes forget about quality, warranties, reliability, reparability and dependability! In anticipation of obtaining a desired item or service defined as "a deal too good to be true," consumers may also overlook interest costs, finance charges, balloon payments, bottom line costs and whether the expense will fit into their budget. Two bits of advice for consumers are: (1) don't buy any item or service from any seller unless you have checked his reputation and have confidence the seller is a responsible retailer or dealer, and (2) don't be in a hurry to sign any installment contract or agreement.
