MacPherson, survival training specialists from the 2849th Air Base Group Survival Training Branch, recently conducted basic winter survival training for employees of the Utah State Parks and Recreation. ; The state requested the additional training to aid parks and recreation personnel in performing such outdoor duties as monitoring trailheads and checking registration and licenses of snowmobilers and operators of three-whemotorcycles. Park rangers are also sometimes involved in assisting search and rescue operations during extreme weather conditions and are forced to stay out in the environment. - - el ' fk llfflL liWIM.aiaMCMft illlllflMIWMlIf 4 4 4 f 3 i fiTOOlnlQIn) Classroom basic training included such subjects as environmental characteristics of Utah, firstself aid, camp sanitation and personal hygiene, personal equipment, food and water procurement, signaling, fire craft, construction and placement of shelters, land navigation, and identifying and packing a personal survival kit. two with medical air service technicians Along from the base hospital, SSgt. Dianna Tillman and SSgt. Thomas Riggs, Sergeants MacPherson and Johnson accompanied the trainees on a two-da- y field training exercise at the Rice Creek Guard Station, Farmington, Utah.' The easy part was getting wet while creating shelters ranging from one bedroom to a three bedroom condo with a skylight. The harder part required trainees to start a fire with two matches and using only natural vegetation. By SSgt. Larry G. MacPherson e D 4 After drying out, the students retired to their 38 degrees Fahrenheit warm shelters compared to the outside temperature of 10 degrees. The temperature only dropped to 34 degrees by morning. Signaling for help was the next step with trainees divided into two groups. One group used a group-to-ai- r signal using tree boughs and space blankets. The second group constructed a smoke generator which sent gray columns of smoke 100-20- 0 feet in the air. Everyone also practiced signaling by mirrors and hand-hel- d flares. A fire proficiency check was called and each person had 15 minutes to prepare and ignite a fire using only natural materials and two matches. Lastly the group discussed land navigation by compass and how to use the map with the compass. bone-chillin- g tv -- , - ' nrMBMHW (U.S. Air Force Photo) Employees of the Utah State Parks and Recreation ignite a smoke generator in conjunction with a smoke flare which is used for several purposes ; in the wilderness.
