Box 369 Milford, Utah 84751 (801) 387-288- 1 Environmental Assessment dealing with an integrated predator control program on the Fish-lak- e National Forest is available for renew in the Forest Supervisor's Office in Richfield, Utah. The Environmental Assessment evaluates four alternatives in detail with others being eliminated from detailed study. The detailed alternatives considered are: (1) Ho action, which would preclude the use of predator control on the Forest; (2) Use of steel traps, snares, callinj and shooting, aerial gunning, denning and guard dogs as appropriate to minimize livestock losses caused by pre datory animals; (3) Use of control methods identified in Alternative 2 together with limited use devices following EPA 4 of guidelines; and (4) limited use of lethal control metlwds with some areas closed to all animal damage control. It is my decision to select Alternative 3. This ajthorizes Animal Damage Control personnel of the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service to carry out predator control activities on the Fishlake National Forest with preventive and corrective control methods inon the cluding the use of following sheep allotments: Scrub Flat, Hancock, UM, North Post Mountain, South Water Hollow, Moroni Peak, Red Creek, and Sal-iCreek, while preventive and traditional control methods can be used on the nine other sheep allotments on the Forest. Emergency use of may be authorized basis. What constitutes significance will be determthrined on a case-- bj - case ough review by the ADC personnel, Forest officials, and the per mittees. No significant problems have existed in the past, thus no control was needed. As cougar and bear populations increase, it is possible that somo corrective action may be needed in the future. Predator control may be authorallotments if ized on animals living there are found to be depredating on livestock on nearby sheep allotments. Selection of alternative 3 as the preferred alternative was based on the desire to have a Ml set of control methods available for use so the most appropriate method could be selected on a priority basis for predator control This approach provides flexibility in reducing livestock losses on the Forest where there is a great diversity in site conditions. The selection was also based on consistent with the Land and Resource Management Plan 'or the Fishlake National Forest, page and EPA safety regulations contained in the Animal Damage Control Manual, Release No. 1 dated February 7, 1983. No evidence has been presented indicating there are significant environmental consequences occurring with tlus type of action of the Fishlake National Forest. Alternative 1 was not selected because it does not permit any type of authorized predator control. Alternative 2 was not selected because the prohibition of removes an effective control metliod from sanctioned operators. Alternative 1 was not selected because Management Area 3 A calls for the development of other resources wlule providing nonmotorized recreation (Plan and Management Area p. 3C permits investments in other resources while providing a diversity of dispersed recreation experiences (Plan p.I'84a). Damage caused by the adults-o- val shaped quarter -- inch long beetles is negligible. Larvae, which are somewhat C -- shaped and resemble a fat grain of rice with a brown head, kill plants by first feeding on the stems and later destroying the root system, Karren said. Root feeding occurs from the thatch level to a depth of about three inches. Damage Is most visible when the truf is under heat and drought stress, from late June through August. "In cases of severe Infestation, the root system is destroyed, and the truf can be rolled bac as if it were freshly laid sod." Karreti said.
