"We endorse the proclamation by the President of the United States, which calls upon citizens to gather together on that day in homes and places of worship to pray to God for unity in the hearts of all mankind. We also encourage daily personal and family prayers of thanksgiving, of grateful acknowledgement of the majesty, wisdom, and goodness of God." "You don't need a full rubon to spray dandelions in your lawn but you should at least have on rubber footwear. Most people spray in front of themselves so they are walking through what they sprayed. If they're wearing tennis shoes, sandals or even leather shoes that absorb '.he material, they're opening themselves to a great deal of exposure to the feet. A pair of slip-o- n rubber galoshes wouH limit your exposure. "I tell most farmers and backyard gardeners that the key to safe use of agriculture chemicals is to limit your exposure to as little as reasonable. A lot of research work has shown that dermal exposure is far greater in pesticide work (about 95 percent) than respiratory or oral exposure. The chemical gets deposited on the skin and then is absorbed through Into the bloodstream," Deer said. "A few pieces of protective clothing will go a long ways toward limiting dermal Your potential exposure. exposure will be reduced a great amount if you'll wear a shirt, long pants, rubber boots, rubber gloves and a hat. Wearing gloves is particularly important when mixing and handling the concentrate he pesticide material." added. ber suit long-sleev- HI : Deer noted that usually, though not always, insecticides are the most hazardous of the pesticides. Herbicides are next followed by He advises, fungicides. "Take time to read the label. When using the product, heed what the label says about protective clothing and breathing protection." With all of this stress on the importance of protecting against the hazards of pesticides, Deer says it's important to keep things In proper perspective. He ack- nowledged that more needs to be known about the longtime or chronic effects of pesticides that get Into the system. He pointed out, however, that generally pesticides are not dangerous when used according to label directions though too much of any chemical taken into one's system can be detrimental. When considering acute poisoning, "Pesticides do not kill as many people as do a lot of common ordinary consumer and products medicines such as aspirin," he said. More information on protective clothing for pesticides may be obtained from the local county extension offices or from Howard Deer at Utah State University, UMC 46, Logan, Utah, 84322, phone 750-160- 0. Howard Deer, extenslon pesticide specialist, Utah State University, says that question is appropriate to consider as we begin another season using these chemical tools to control Insects, weeds and plant diseases. Since coming with USU Extension Service in 1982, Deer says he has seen a lot of home yard users of pesticides who seem oblivious to any need for protective clothing.
