Show 1 f ' TWESOlf HAT 6th, lttS oodbock Dttr Red, Recently, we have heard comments from uninformed persons refixdinf the operations of the Milford Taller Memorial Hospital. We, as the board of dlreetort, would like aa opportunity to explain these negative statements by telling what our responsi-blliti- es are as elected mem. of that board. It could be worse. This year, that's not Just a hopeful cliche. B's a direct response to some tax save the hospital around f C0.0OO in 1983. Second, the board reversed the free meal policy for employees. Now the only meal an employee can get while on duty is a sandwich and they must pay a dollar for that. They also must pay for any coffee, tea, milk, etc they norwere getting free. mally This should save the hospital about $15,000 In groceries alone. They also revised the employee pharmacy privileges so that an employee must pay more to get a prescription filled at the hospital pharmacy. We would like to stress the point here that all of these changes were made with the employees blessing, because they above all, don't want to ever lose this great little hospital. COMMENT NO. 3. This should Symond controls thboospiUl and staff and all the board does Is rubber stamp whatever he wants. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. David Symond and his assistant Mary Wiseman have fJor years now been our only source of medical care In this community up until M ike Symond arrived a year and a half ago. They worked and sacrificed most of their lives to keep us healthy emough to enjoy ours. Of course it would be easy under those circumstances to allo w him to control the destiny- of the hospital, but be hasnt. Of all the people in Mil-fo- rd who have been foe most supportive of the Hospital Board and stood behind their decisions, Dr. Symond could be counted on the most. He has never been demanding on the board, nor has he ever insisted on being In on any policy making decisions. The only time he ever attends a meeting of the board is when he is called In for advise on something that will directly affect the medical staff of the hospital. COMMENT NO. 2: "Hospital costs are going out of sight and our board is sitting there doing nothing." That is pure nonsense. Anyone who attended the annual general board meeting February 21, would have received the real story of what the board of directors have implemented for the To offset year of 1983. last year's financial loss, the board made some major policy changes in employee salary and benefits. But 99' of the general public doesnt realize that local hospitals don't have the control over what they must cliarge the individual patient in order to keep the hos- pital going. When the x federal govern--rne- nt decided to get into the business of providing health care for the poor and the elderly in 1965, little did they know the devastating effect it would have on the rest of the nation in paying for their own health care. First, the government set their own rules and regulations the hospitals had to abide by in order to qualify to care for their patients. Results: An enormous increase in the usual costs the hospitals normally experienced. But that wasn't ved V. As the years went by, they took it upon themselves to change the rules whenever it would be to their advantage without ever consulting the hospitals before enacting the changes. They also created a dozen or so new bureaucracies to govern these regulations without any coordination between them as to whom was responsible for what set of rules. Therefore, the hospitals had no choice but to comply with all of the agencies even though doing so meant conflicting regulations would cause huge problems for them. And now, above all of that, the government has decided it Is with- in their jurisdiction to tell the hospitals just how much they're going to pay them to take care of their patients regardless of how much it Is costing the hospital. Hope all is going well with you and that Milford someday has the "Pie in the Sky' project turn Into reality and gives the area the economic boost you've all been waiting for.
